Waverly, Iowa, Dec. 29, 2019 – Senior Kristina Schmelter recorded the third double-double of her career but it was not enough as the Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team suffered an 87-74 loss to No. 11-ranked University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Sunday at the Wartburg Holiday Tournament in Waverly, Iowa.

UW-La Crosse won its seventh game in a row to improve to 9-1 while WashU had its five-game win streak snapped and fell to 7-3. All three of WashU's losses this season have been to teams ranked in the D3hoops.comTop-25 Poll.

Schmelter had 14 points and a career-best 15 rebounds, while sophomore Isabelle Hren added 17 points and sophomore Sammi Matoush had 11. WashU shot a season-low 32.1 percent (25-78) from the field, but stayed in the contest by hitting 10-of-25 from three-point range.

WashU outrebounded UWL 46-39, and turned 21 offensive rebounds in a 22-6 advantage in second-chance points.

Back-to-back threes from freshman Molly Gannon and Hren gave the Bears their first lead of the game at 9-8. Hren scored 10-straight points for WashU and trailed 28-20 after one quarter of play. UW-La Crosse shot 61.1 percent (11-18) in the first quarter.

Matoush kept it close for WashU in the second quarter scoring nine points. She scored six-straight, including a three-pointer, which cut the UW-La Crosse lead to one (35-34). Sophomore Hayley Semple came off the bench and hit a corner three to get the UWL lead down to 41-39 at half.

Hren led all scorers with 13 points in the first half, while Matoush added nine points. WashU shot just 33.3 percent (13-39) from the field, but hit 6-of-13 from three-point range. 

UWL took at 50-42 lead in the third when Schmelter scored six-straight points to get the lead back to two. The Eagles responded with a 7-0 run to make it 57-48. Gannon nailed a long three at the buzzer to end the third to trim the advantage to 61-57. 

Schmelter's put back with 9:25 to play cut the lead to two (61-59), but that would be as close as WashU would get. The Bears hit just 5-of-24 (20.8%) from the field in the fourth.

Emma Gamoke led all scorers with 20 points, while Delaney Schoenenberger (17), Kyah Stiener (13) and Lexie Higgins (11) also scored in double figures. UWL shot 52.5 percent (31-59) from the field and hit 11-of-21 from three.

WashU takes on No. 14 Baldwin-Wallace (8-1) in the consolation championship on Monday, Dec. 30, at 1 p.m. BW suffered its first loss of the season Sunday to No. 7 Wartburg College 79-48.
