Tigers Fall Short At Redlands


LOS ANGELES — The Occidental women's basketball team battled against the first-place Redlands Bulldogs, but fell short of a road upset in a 68-57 loss on Wednesday.

The Tigers were tied at halftime and trailed by just three points at the end of the third quarter.

But Redlands outplayed the Tigers in the fourth to hold on for the victory.

"We played hard and attacked well off the dribble," Oxy head coach Anahit Aladzhanyan said. "The rebounding differential eventually cost us the game, but we battled and gave ourselves a good shot against a good team."

Maylene U. Hughes, a standout first year guard who has dazzled with her speed and creativity with the ball in transition this year, finished with a game-high 22 points, to go along with three assists and three rebounds. She was excellent from the field, shooting 10 for 17 from.

Taylor Yoshida was 6 for 13 for 12 points, Michaela Smith added six points and seven rebounds, and Raveena Dhiman had six points on 2 for 3 shooting from three for Oxy. Clarissa Kiyomura had five points and three rebounds, and Kulaea Tulua had four points off the bench for the Tigers. Mallory North grabbed six rebounds.

Redlands was led by Alyssa Downs who had a team-high 13 points, Cassandra Lacey had 11, and Alyssa Lee scored 10 off the bench.

Oxy struggled on the boards, losing the rebounding battle 43-29, giving up second chance opportunities.

Oxy shot 44 percent form the field and held the Bulldogs to just 14 percent shooting from three.

Season Impact: The Tigers fall to 5-4 overall and 1-2 in SCIAC play.

Redlands improves to 7-3 and 3-0, and is in first place in the SCIAC standings.

Next Game: Oxy breaks for the holidays and then returns to action on Dec. 29 against WPI at Oxy at 2 p.m.
