Yeshiva Falls to York College (N.Y.)

NEW YORK – The Yeshiva University women's basketball team dropped a non-conference matchup to York College (N.Y.), 73-63, at the ARC Arena on Sunday evening. The Maccabees drop to 3-9, while the Cardinals advance to 3-5.

Senior forward Tehilla Teigman produced her tenth double-double of the season for the Macs, netting 10 points and grabbing just as many rebounds. The Houston native also contributed on the defensive end with four steals. Sophomore guard Jessie Orgel scored a team-high 18 points, while forcing four steals and bringing down three caroms. Freshman guard Yuval Nitzan added 10 points, collected a game-best five steals, brought down four boards, and distributed three assists.

York never trailed at any point in the game. Freshman guard Destiny Drummond converted a layup to give the Cardinals their largest lead of the opening half, 28-13, with 7:57 remaining. Yeshiva fought back with an 11-1 run, capped off by a 3-point field goal from Orgel to shrink the deficit to 29-24 with 1:03 left to play before the break. However, sophomore forward Keyla Cabrera's layup with 11 ticks on the clock gave York a 31-24 hold at the intermission.

The Cardinals opened the second half with six straight points to go up by 13. The Maccabees were able to slice the deficit to nine, but York pulled away again 9-2 run to strengthen its advantage, at 49-33. Senior guard Adina Rosenberg answered York's blitz by draining a shot from beyond the arc, while being fouled. She added the free throw to complete the rare four-point play to pull YU to within 12, at 49-37, with 1:04 left in the third.

York led by as many as 17 in the fourth quarter, but Yeshiva outscored the opposition by a 15-8 margin in the last 5:01 to make the final score more respectable. Sophomore guard Rebecca Malech nailed a shot from well beyond the arc at the final buzzer to cap off the scoring.

For the Maccabees, sophomore forward Jennie Mellman produced eight points with two rebounds, while classmate Mahlia Leventhal added five points, three steals, and a pair of boards. Senior guard Chana Boltax provided a 3-point basket, while junior forward Lindsay Brandwein brought down three rebounds.

For the Cardinals, sophomore center Mac-Dege Dessources produced a double-double with 21 points and 17 rebounds. Drummond added 21 points of her own to go along with five rebounds, four assists, and three steals.

Yeshiva will return to action on Thursday, January 23, with a non-conference game against The King's College (N.Y.) at the Aviator Sports and Events Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
