Tully's Double-Double Leads Cortland Women Past SUNY Poly, 61-47

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman Sarah Tully (East Aurora) recorded a double-double in the first half alone and finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds as Cortland defeated visiting SUNY Poly, 61-47, in a non-league women's basketball matchup.

Cortland wraps up the first semester with a 6-1 record, its best start since opening the 2014-15 season with a 9-1 mark. The Red Dragons return to action at home versus Hamilton College on January 5 at 5 p.m. in a makeup of a game postponed on Dec. 2.

Tully's 15 points are her career best and her 14 rebounds match her highest total set during the season opener versus Hartwick. Shannon McGuire (West Babylon) scored 10 points and dished out three assists, Casey Travers (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) hit 3-of-4 3-pointers and finished with nine points, and Beth Bonin (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) led the Red Dragons with six assists and three steals.

Also for Cortland, Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) added six rebounds and two steals, Meghan Flanagan (Rochester/Brighton) had five points and four boards, and Tatiana Stevens (Shirley/Longwood) pulled down five rebounds.

Jaida Washington led SUNY Poly (3-3) with 15 points, 12 rebounds and four blocked shots. Kiersten Leos tallied 10 points and Taylor Aybar finished with seven points, five steals and two assists.

Cortland finished the first quarter on an 8-2 run to take a 16-11 lead, and the Red Dragons outscored the Wildcats 24-7 in the second to lead 40-18 at halftime. Tully totaled 11 points and eight rebounds in the second quarter and finished the half with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Both teams struggled offensively in the third quarter, with SUNY Poly holding a 7-6 edge to trail 46-25.

The Wildcats, however, cut a 21-point deficit to 10 in less than a four-minute stretch during the fourth. Their 15-4 run featured two Leos 3-pointers, the second of which cut Cortland's lead to 52-42 with 4:41 remaining.

Katie Carey (Greene) hit a free throw with 4:18 left to put Cortland up by 11 and neither team scored again until Longford's putback with 2:56 left pushed the margin to 13. Cortland led by at least 11 the rest of the way.

Cortland shot 35 percent from the field overall and 37 percent (7-for-19) from the arc. SUNY Poly finished at 32 percent overall and 33 percent (7-for-21) from 3-point range. The Red Dragons outscored the Wildcats on the foul line, 12-2, and used 19 offensive rebounds to finish with a 13-4 second-chance points advantage. The teams combined for 41 turnovers - 21 by Cortland and 20 by SUNY Poly.
