St. Louis, Mo., Dec. 7, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team limited No. 25-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges to 26.1 percent shooting in a 67-52 win in the final game of the 19th Annual McWilliams Classic Saturday at the WU Field House.
Sophomore Samantha Weaver led the Bears with a career-high 18 points and nine rebounds, while freshman Sammi Matoush had the first double-double of her career with a season-high 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Senior Kristina Schmelter also scored in double figures with 12 points on 6-of-6 free-throw shooting, while sophomore Isabelle Hren filled up the stat sheet with nine points and seven rebounds.
Weaver was named the Jacqueline Bickel Schapp MVP Award after averaging 14.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game, while Matoush joined Weaver on the All-Tournament Team averaging 14.0 points and 8.0 boards per contest.
Kessie Jenkins (Hendrix), Hannah Krukewitt (Greenville), Lauren Longo (CMS) and Maezelle Millan (CMS) were also named to the All-Tournament Team.
WashU won its third-straight game to improve to 5-2, while CMS suffered its first loss of the season and fell to 6-1.
WashU opened the game on a 13-2 run as CMS hit just one of its first 13 shots from the field. Weaver had eight of the first 10 points for the Bears. WashU led 17-4 after one quarter as the Bears connected on 11-of-12 from the foul line in the quarter.
CMS missed its first eight threes in the game, but a triple from Jacey Carter with 9:34 to play before half cut the WashU advantage to 19-7.
WashU led 28-14 at the half as the Bears limited CMS to 5-of-37 shooting (16.7%) from the field. The two teams combined for 19 turnovers and just four assists. Weaver had eight points and three boards in the first half.
Matoush scored the first five points for WashU in the third quarter to extend the advantage to 33-18. She had nine points in the quarter as the teams combined for 42 points (21-21).
Weaver scored the first six points of the fourth to extend the WashU lead to 55-38. The Bears shot 53.8 percent (7-13) from the field in the final quarter.
Kate Parrish led CMS with a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Longo and Millan added eight points each. The Athenas tied a single-game McWilliams Classic record with nine blocks.
WashU shot 42.0 percent (21-50) from the field in the win and hit a season-high 23-of-29 (79.3%) from the free-throw line. The Bears outrebounded CMS 49-38, and had a season-low six assists.
WashU travels across the street to take on Fontbonne on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at 6 p.m.
