CORTLAND, N.Y. – Beth Bonin (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) scored 16 points and handed out seven assists and Cortland held Elmira to less than 19 percent shooting from the field as the Red Dragons defeated the visiting Soaring Eagles, 69-43, in non-league women's basketball action.
Cortland improved to 3-1 with the victory while Elmira fell to 2-2. Cortland will host Hamilton College next Monday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m.
Bonin finished 5-of-11 from the field, including two 3-pointers, and made all four of her free throws. Nyia Longford (Medford/Longwood) added 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting and Shannon McGuire (West Babylon) rang up eight points, six rebounds, four assists and a team-high six steals. Sarah Tully (East Aurora) led Cortland with 10 rebounds, Jess Womble (Wheatley Heights/Half Hollow Hills East) dished out three assists, and Katie Carey (Greene) and Tatiana Stevens (Shirley/Longwood) netted six points apiece.
Taylor Johnson scored 14 points and added four steals and Emily Breheny finished with nine points, nine rebounds and two blocks for Elmira.
Cortland shot 35 percent from the field overall, but only 15 percent (4-of-27) from 3-point range. The Red Dragons, however, connected on 15-of-20 free throws. Elmira ended the game at 18.5 percent overall and 19 percent (4-for-21) from the arc, and the Soaring Eagles hit 15-of-22 foul shots. Cortland held a 19-6 advantage in second-chance points and a 22-10 points off of turnovers edge.
Bonin scored the last four points of the first quarter to give Cortland a 15-7 lead. Elmira was within seven at 20-13 on Bridget Yaw's layup with 5:41 remaining in the second, but Cortland finished the half on a 14-5 run and led 34-18 at the break.
The lead grew to 47-20 three minutes into the third quarter and as high as 33 points during the period. The Red Dragons' lead held between 24 and 33 points in the fourth.
