WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's basketball team outscored Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) favorites Baldwin Wallace 34-30 in the second half but could not overcome a slow start as the Presidents fell to the Yellow Jackets 65-53 on Wednesday afternoon.
Armed with a 16-point halftime lead, Baldwin Wallace pushed its advantage to as many as 20 points as the Yellow Jackets led 44-24 with 5:07 left in the third quarter.
The Presidents responded by scoring seven of the quarter's final nine points with an layups from Alie Seto(Alison, Pa./Brownsville) and Maddie Gutierrez(Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) and a three from Catherine Martin (Blairsville, Pa./Blairsville).
In the fourth, Seto scored nine of her team-high 18 points, included five-straight points to trim W&J's deficit to 57-47 with 3:11 remaining in regulation. B-W responded with a Kasey Hughes three-pointer, before Lauren Gilbert(Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) connected on a triple of her own to bring the deficit back to 10.
Baldwin Wallace connected on 11-of-12 free throws in the fourth quarter as time ran out on the Presidents' comeback bid.
In the first quarter, W&J held an early 4-3 lead on layups by Seto and Aleena McDaniel (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown), however B-W closed the quarter on a 12-2 run to lead 15-6 after 10 minutes of play.
W&J was unable to trim the Yellow Jacket's lead in the second quarter, trailing by at least nine points the entire period. B-W scored seven of the final nine points of the half to turn an 11-point lead into a 35-19 halftime edge.
B-W outscored the Presidents 8-5 to begin the second half to extend its lead to 20 before the Presidents rallied back.
Seto led the Presidents with 18 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Gilbert connected on three-of six threes and finished with 11 points. Piper Morningstar (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) had two threes and finished with seven points.
Victoria Keibler (Tarentum, Pa./Deer Lakes) appeared in her first collegiate game and had two points, three assists and three steals in 18 minutes. Fellow freshmen Gutierrez and Victoria Koeck (Sidman, Pa./Forest Hills) chipped in with four and two points.
The Presidents finished +7 (21-14) in the turnover battle and had 12 steals.
W&J (3-2) heads to Allegheny on Tuesday for a 6:00 p.m. tipoff.
