#2 Saints Defeat Alfred State in ACAA Semifinals; Hans Earns 200th Career Win

(ALFRED, N.Y.) – Thomas More University head women's basketball coach Jeff Hans earned his 200th career win today (Saturday, February 23, 2019) as the second-ranked and top-seeded Saints defeated fourth-seeded Alfred State College, 106-56, in the semifinal round of the American Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) Tournament in Alfred, New York.  The Saints improve to 26-0 and the Pioneers end the season at 6-18.

FIRST HALF:

  • Thomas More led 30-16 after one quarter and 58-28 at halftime.
  • The Saints shot 53.3 percent (24-of-45) from the field
  • Thomas More had a 16-0 advantage in second chance points, 25-7 on fast break points and 38-12 in the paint.
  • Senior guard Madison Temple (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) recorded a double-double in the first half with 17 points and 10 rebounds to go with five assists.
  • First-year guard Asyah Mitchell (Kenton County, Ky./Cooper) added 11 points.
  • Junior guard Kaela Saner (Florence, Ky./Boone County) had eight points in the half.
  • Senior forward Shelby Rupp (Milan, Ind./Batesville) scored eight points.

SECOND HALF:

  • Thomas More extended its lead to 79-39 after three quarters and cruised to the 106-56 victory.
  • The Saints shot 41.8 percent (18-of-43) from the floor.
  • Thomas More held a 30-8 advantage on points in the paint.
  • Junior forward Emily Schultz (Melbourne, Ky./Bishop Brossart) led team in scoring in the second half with 12 points.
  • Sophomore guard Briana McNutt (Maysville, Ky./Mason County) had six points in the half.
  • Temple added six points and five rebounds in the closing half.
  • Rupp pulled down five rebounds in the final 20 minutes.

NOTABLES:

  • Thomas More shot 47.7 percent (42-of-88) from the field in the game.
  • The Saints out-scored the Pioneers 68-20 in the paint, 33-5 on second chance points and 36-9 on fast breaks.
  • Hans, who is in his eighth season leading the Saints, has a 200-11 career record for a .948 winning percentage.  He has also led the Saints to four undefeated regular seasons.
  • Temple recorded a triple-double as she scored 23 points, pulled down 14 rebounds and dished out 10 assists.
  • Schultz finished with 19 points and five rebounds.
  • McNutt had 13 points and three steals.
  • Mitchell finished with 11 points and five rebounds.
  • Rupp added 10 points and seven rebounds.

  • The Saints will look to win their 12th-straight conference title (11-straight Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) titles before leaving the conference) tomorrow when they play either second-seeded Finlandia University or third-seeded University of Valley Forge at 12 p.m. in Alfred, New York.
