Women Stumble Late At Lynchburg

The EMU basketball women lost on the road at University of Lynchburg 68-61 Saturday afternoon. With the loss the Royals sit tenth in the ODAC standings with a 6-10 record tied with Shenandoah who they play next on Wednesday, February 13 at 5:00pm. The top ten teams make the tournament and the women can reach as high as the eighth seed if they win their last two games holding the tie-breaker over Roanoke.

The Hornets jumped out to a 15-5 lead in the first quarter. Lexi Deffenbaugh(Fishersville, Va./Wilson Memorial) made a three pointer in the final minute to give the Royals some momentum heading into the second quarter.

Lynchburg lead 23-11 at the 6:25 mark in the second quarter before a layup by Jess Washington (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) sparked a 16-3 run for EMU. Chrissy Delawder (Broadway, Va./Broadway) and Constance Komara (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) both hit three pointers during the span that was capped by a Lindsey Krisak (Alexandria, Va./Thomas A. Edison) jumper to give the Royals a 27-26 advantage going into halftime.

EMU held the lead in the third with the Hornets matching each score. Delawder provided separation for the Royals drilling three, three pointers in a row to put EMU up by ten at 44-34 with 1:52 to go in the quarter.

Lynchburg used a 10-0 run of their own to even the score again. The Hornets used three point shooting to take a 61-53 lead with three minutes to go in the game. Delawder kept the Royals within five points in the final minute with a made three, but Lynchburg made free throws down the stretch to ice the game.

The Hornets shot 46.2% (24-52) from the field and 47.4% (9-19) from three while EMU shot 38.5% (25-65) and 40.9% (9-22) from behind the arc.

Delawder finished with 20 points for the second game in a row making five threes on seven attempts. Krisak finished with ten points, three assists, and 2 steals. Emily McCombs(Culpeper, Va./Eastern View) and Deffenbaugh both scored eight points and combined for seven rebounds.

Erin Green led University of Lynchburg with 16 points and seven rebounds. Molly Shephard and Maggie Quarles both scored 14 points for the Hornets.
