BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's basketball team's strong fourth quarter was not enough, as the Maccabees fell to Skyline rival St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, by a score of 67-61, at the Hill Center on Thursday evening. The Bears advance to 11-5 in the conference (15-8 overall), while the Maccabees drop to 3-11 in Skyline contests (6-15 overall).
With the win, St. Joseph's Brooklyn clinches a home playoff game in the upcoming Skyline Conference championships and remains in fourth place in the standings.
The Maccabees outscored the Bears, 25-8, in the final stanza. It was a strong effort defensively for Yeshiva overall, holding St. Joseph's Brooklyn to just 33.8 percent shooting from the field
Leading the way for the Maccabees was junior forward Tehilla Teigman, who scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Senior forward Michal Alge produced a double-double with 13 points and 19 rebounds, while dishing out three assists and forcing five steals. Senior guard Nicole Bick scored 17 points, distributed three assists, forced just as many steals, and grabbed a pair of caroms.
The Bears jumped out to a 16-2 advantage. Alge grabbed an offensive rebound and successfully converted a layup, while being fouled. The Boston native completed the traditional three-point play by hitting a free throw, to narrow the Bears' lead to 11 with 4:10 remaining in the period. St. Joseph's led 23-8 after 10 minutes of play.
In the late stages of the second quarter, junior guard Gina Hopkins of St. Joseph's Brooklyn received an outlet pass and sprinted down the court. Sophomore guard Chana Boltax hustled behind her and blocked her layup attempt, preventing the Bears from scoring an easy basket. The two teams went into the half with the home team up, 43-18.
The Maccabees got off to a strong start in the second half, as a 3-point field goal by Bick began a 7-0 run for the Blue and White, to narrow SJCB's lead to 45-27. The Bears scored seven of the game's next nine points to regain control of the contest. However, Yeshiva once again scored seven unanswered points, capped off by Boltax's 3-pointer, to shrink St. Joseph's lead to 52-36 with 4:24 remaining in the stanza. SJCB closed out the period with seven straight points to go back up by 23, after 30 minutes of play.
In the fourth, Hopkins successfully executed a layup to put the Bears back up by 21, after YU scored the first four points of the quarter. From that point on, Yeshiva took over the game by going on a 21-4 run, in a span of 8:09, to pull to within four (65-61) with 27 seconds remaining. During that run, Teigman converted four layups, while Bick and Boltax each hit a 3-point shot. During Yeshiva's rally, the Macs' defense held the opposition scoreless for 4:31. It was Bick's shot from beyond the arc that shrunk the Bears' lead to 65-61 with 27 ticks on the clock. However, sophomore guard Kelly O'Donnell hit two free throws, with six seconds remaining, to clinch the win for the Bears.
For Yeshiva, Boltax scored six points, grabbed three rebounds, and collected two steals. Sophomore forward Lindsay Brandwein brought down four caroms and scored two points. Senior guard Penny Rabin and sophomore forward Celia Cohen each scored two points, with the former grabbing three rebounds and the latter bringing down two. Junior forward Ellie Parker and sophomore guard Adina Rosenberg brought down two caroms each, while first-year guard Tova Mamann had one rebound of her own.
For St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, O'Donnell and junior forward Lauren Quesada each produced a double-double, with the former scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. The latter netted 12 points and clutched 10 boards. Senior guard Victoria Porcasi added 12 points and two rebounds. O'Donnell also had three steals and two blocks.
The Maccabees will travel to Kings Point, on Sunday, for a Skyline matchup at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
