KERRVILLE, Texas – Using an attacking offense and stifling defense, the East Texas Baptist University women's basketball team prevailed 86-43 over Schreiner University. With eight players scoring at least six points in the win, ETBU improves to 2-0 on the young season and drops SU to 0-1 in their first game of the year.

Marissa Warren led the well-balanced effort for the Tigers, scoring 12 points along with five rebounds, while Kim Childress added 11 points and three boards. Mallory Stephens contributed nine points and Valarie Matlock chipped in eight points and three steals. As a team, ETBU shot 50.8 percent from the floor (30-of-59) and connected on a blistering 54.2 percent (13-of-24) from the three- point line. Sydney Williams led the Mountaineers with 10 points. 
 
Williams opened the first quarter with the first score, converting a layup after a foul and a pass from Kendall Dyal at the 7:47 mark of the period. Two free throws by Kendra Brown gave SU the 5-0 advantage in the first three minutes. A three pointer by Childress trimmed the lead to two (5-3) with 7:28 on the game clock. Scores by Karley McHenry, Kayla Bise and Stephens capped off a 10-0 run by the Tigers which gave ETBU the 10-5 lead at the 4:51 mark of the contest. ETBU outscored SU 6-3 in the final four minutes to lead 18-8 at the end of the first quarter. 
 
The Tigers led 19-9 at the start of the second quarter, when a three-point jumper by Dyal narrowed the deficit to seven points (19-12) three minutes into the period. Anna Moss responded by banking in a free throw line jumper to push the lead back to nine (21-12) on the next possession. SU brought the game to within seven once again but then a three pointer by Bise increased the lead to 10 (24-14) with 6:31 to play until the half. Warren connected on a three - point jumper of her own to increase the score to 31-19 with 2:51 to play in the second quarter. ETBU headed into the locker room with a 35-22 advantage. 
 
The Tigers opened the second half with a three - point shot by Kendrick Clark to push the lead to 16 (38-22) in the opening moments of the third quarter. Clark, Amanda Wilson and April Matthews helped to push the lead to 20 (44-24) with 6:07 on the clock. The Tigers' stellar defense held the Mountaineers to just six points in the third to head into the fourth quarter with a 56-28 lead. 
 
SU looked to make a run in the fourth quarter, sparking a 10-2 run to narrow the gap to 58-38 with 7:22 to play in the contest. In spite of the comeback effort, a three pointer by Taylor Singleton and a jump shot by Childress pushed the lead to 25 (63-38) at the 6:21 mark of the game. ETBU went on to win the ballgame 86-43, improving to 2-0 overall.
 
ETBU will host the Texas Lutheran at home on Friday, Nov. 16, at Ornelas Gym. The team's first home game is set to tip-off at 5:00 p.m.
