KERRVILLE, Texas – With a driving layup down the middle of the lane with 5:23 left in the first quarter, junior Jasmine Morris made Ladies basketball history. She became just the seventh member of the 1,000-point club, achieving this milestone in her 68th collegiate game – besting career points leader Alexis Pettaway by 14 contests.
While Morris' history-making feat jumpstarted a 10-0 run, the Maroon and White found themselves down by seven early in the fourth quarter. However, the Ladies rallied and made the game-winning layup with 1.3 seconds left as Centenary (4-13, 2-5 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) upended Schreiner (5-12, 3-3 SCAC) 70-68 Saturday night, January 20.
The win was Centenary's first away from the Gold Dome this season.
Trailing 66-65, freshman Kayla King became a big factor in the Ladies rallying. After hitting a jumper to give Centenary the lead with 1:32 left, she grabbed a steal and split from the line to push the advantage to 68-66. Schreiner tied the game just under a minute with an offensive rebound and putback, but Centenary had the ball virtually the rest of the contest. Morris missed a jumper and Schreiner grabbed the rebound, but the Mountaineers quickly turned it over.
With a little more than a second difference game clock to shot clock, King received the ball in the post and drove past the falling down defender for the go-ahead layup with 1.3 seconds left. Schreiner advanced the ball into the frontcourt, but did not even get off a shot as Centenary held on for the win.
King, who scored 10 points for her first double-digit game in SCAC play, scored nine points in the fourth quarter alone on 4-for-5 shooting. Lyons added a season high for the second-straight game with 19 points on 7-for-11 shooting. Morris finished with 14 while freshman Haylee Washington added 12 points.
Down 6-4 after Morris' history-making basket, freshman Ethany Cosby tied the game on a layup and Lyons made a layup for the first Centenary lead. After sophomore Deunya Small split from the line, Lyons buried the first of three triples in five attempts for the game as Centenary led 12-6 in the first.
Schreiner trailed 16-9 after the first, but scored the first seven of the second to tie the game. Kendal Dyal – who finished the game with 16 points – made a layup. Danielle Cain added a three, and two free throws by Jordyn Villa tied the game at 16.
Schreiner led 32-30 with seconds remaining in the first half, but Lyons drained a three to give the Ladies the lead into the intermission.
The Mountaineers led 53-51 in the fourth when two from the line for Dyal and a three-pointer by Kayla Alvarado gave the home team a seven-point edge – its largest of the game.
Villa paced the Mountaineers with a game high 22 points.
Centenary returns to action Friday when it hosts nationally-ranked Trinity. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
