Muhlenberg Women Tie Record for Longest Win Streak

The Muhlenberg women's basketball team built a 30-point halftime lead and went on to defeat Franklin & Marshall, 75-39, for its 13th straight win to start the season.

The Mules, who are ranked 12th by D3hoops.com and 15th by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, tied the school records for most consecutive wins and fastest start, both set in the 2001-02 season.

The win, combined with Haverford's 67-56 victory at Gettysburg, left Muhlenberg (8-0) as the only team undefeated in Centennial Conference play. The Mules host Gettysburg on Thursday in a rematch of the 2017 CC championship game.

Senior Chelsea Gary led all scorers with 20 points in just 23 minutes. Fellow seniors Rachel Plotke (12) and Brandi Vallely (11) also scored in double figures.

The two teams started out going back and forth, with the Mules holding an 8-6 lead less than three minutes into the game. The Diplomats (5-7, 2-5) did not score the rest of the quarter, with Muhlenberg closing on a 13-0 run to take a 21-6 lead.

It was 23-6 before F&M broke its scoring drought of more than eight minutes with a putback, but the Mules did not allow another field goal for more than three more minutes, by which time they had a 20-point lead.

Muhlenberg took a 47-17 lead into the halftime break and extended its lead to as many as 37 points in the second half.

In beating F&M for the 12th straight time, the Mules held the leading scorer in the CC to two points, both on free throws late in the third quarter. Muhlenberg also forced 14 turnovers in the first half against a Diplomat squad that came in averaging 14.4 per game.

In addition to her 11 points, Vallely recorded six assists and four steals, giving her an even 200 thefts for her career.

Sophomore Ashley Polera scored seven points in 11 minutes off the bench.
