Maciejewski's Buzzer Beater Lifts Knights Over Pacers

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team wrapped up the regular season with an exciting 56-55 buzzer beating win at Marywood University on Saturday afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.

 

Nafisa Saunders led the Knights with 25 points. Lauren Legler netted 11 points. Mariah Maciejewski hit the winning basket and finished with eight points and 11 rebounds.

 

All four quarter were close. During the first three quarters, the teams scoring difference was only one point. For the fourth quarter, it increased to a two point difference. The game came down to the last possession. The Pacers took a 55-54 lead with four seconds left on the clock. The Knights then took a timeout. Off the inbound pass, Saunders found Maciejewski under the net for the winning layup as the horn sounded.

 

Marywood started the game scoring nine of the first 11 points. Neumann ended the first half on an 11-3 run for a 13-12 score after the first 10 minutes.

 

The Pacers started the second quarter with a three to take back the lead. Saunders answered with a three of her own to take back a one point advantage. The Knights would build their lead to as many as five in the period and took a 24-22 lead into halftime.

 

The Knights opened the second half with a 9-2 run to take a 33-25 lead. The Pacers came back to within one, 36-35, with two minutes on the clock. Two free throws by Saunders wrapped up the scoring for the third quarter and Neumann held a 38-35 lead into the final 10 minutes.

 

The final quarter remained close and the teams were knotted at 51 with 1:44 left in regulation. An AAliya Hayes layup and a free throw by Saunders put Neumann up by three with 54 seconds remaining. Marywood hit a layup with 40 seconds to get within one. The Pacers then took the one point lead with four seconds remaining. The Knights would then set up Maciejewski's buzzer beating basket.

 

Neumann (18-7, 13-3 CSAC) will be the No. 2 seed in the CSAC playoffs. The Knights will host a semifinal game on Wednesday evening. Time and opponent are both to-be-determined.
