Knights Continue to Fly High with Win over Griffins

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team picked up its eighth straight win with a 72-53 win over Gwynedd Mercy University on Saturday afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.

Mariah Maciejewski had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. AAliya Hayes hit double figures to lead the Knights with 26 points and Lauren Legler added 20, 18 of which came on six three-pointers. The Knights scored 18 points in each quarter en route to the win.


The Griffins scored the first basket 15 seconds into the game. Legler answered back with the next five points of the game. The Knights and the Griffins battled basket for basket for the rest of the quarter. Legler scored eight of the Knights 18 points of the quarter and Neumann took an 18-12 lead after the first 10 minutes.


During the first seven and half minutes of the second, the two teams battled it out again and the Griffins cut the Knights lead down by seven. Legler hit another three-pointer to pull away with a 10 point lead. With 1:48 left till half, Alex Fernandez made both of her foul shots for a 13 points advantage. Hayes, with one second left before the break, hit a layup to put the Knights up 14 points, 36-22, at the half.


To start the second half, the Griffins battled their way back to within 11 in the first four minutes, 42-31. The Knights then went on a 12-4 to rebuild their lead to 19 with 1:32 left and took a 54-39 lead into the final 10 minutes of play.

Hayes started with the scoring again for both teams 2:15 into the final quarter and the Knights scored the first six points of the fourth for a 60-39 lead. Legler hit another three to give the Knights a 24 point lead and Fernandez went 1-for-2 from the line to give Neumann its biggest lead of the game, 66-41, midway through the quarter.

Neumann (13-6, 8-2 CSAC) will host Immaculata on Wednesday evening in more conference action. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 PM.
