BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (Jan. 22, 2017) – Despite an early lead, the Sewanee women's basketball team dropped a 69-60 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) contest at Birmingham-Southern, Sunday, inside Bill Battle Coliseum.
Sewanee played well early as Bella Taylor, Hannah McCormack, Corey Caulder, and Savannah Rose all scored in the first five minutes. That helped Sewanee lead 16-8 after a McCormack layup.
BSC answered back with a three from Jameice Holmes. That sparked a 14-0 run by the Panthers that carried over into the second quarter. After BSC hit three straight three-point field-goals to start the second, the Panthers led 22-16.
Sewanee responded with a three by Rose. Over the next five minutes, both teams continued to trade scores before halftime. Two free throws by Bella Taylor pulled Sewanee to within one, before the Panthers closed the half on a 12-2 run.
Sewanee clawed back into the game over the first four minutes of the third quarter. Down 40-27, a pair of Allison Hitchcock and a three by Caulder opened an 8-0 run by the purple and gold.
Unfortunately, a three by Holmes stopped the run. From there, Sewanee pulled to within five points with 1:02 left to play, however BSC scored four straight points that sealed the win down the stretch.
Overall, Sewanee struggled from the field for the second straight game. The Tigers made only 31.7 percent of their shots.
Individually, McCormack led Sewanee with 23 points while Caulder (11 points - six rebounds) and Taylor (10 points – four rebounds – five assists) also finished in double figures.
Paced by their play inside the paint, the Panthers made 40 percent of their shots. Forward Emilee Olsen finished with a 20-point, 13-rebound double-double.
Holmes added 11 points and six boards while Laura Van Peursem finished with 13 rebounds, five assists, and four points.
Sewanee, who has lost four SAA games by less than 10 points, continues SAA play with a 6:00 p.m. contest against Millsaps, Friday.
