More news about: SUNY Potsdam

St. Lawrence wasted no time getting their offense started. Sophomore guard Abbey Smith (Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford) opened with a 3-pointer 19 seconds into the game, but the Saints took over from there. Senior forward Caroline Dalton (Rochester, N.Y./Fairport) answered Smith's three with her own to ignite a 23-6 run that spanned over most of the first quarter. Dalton completed the first with 11 points, well junior guard Jenny Scudder (Fairport, N.Y./Harley-Allendale Columbia) added nine. St. Lawrence led 25-12, but the Bears answered in the second by outscoring the Saints 17-8. Senior captains Meghan Driscoll (Troy, N.Y./Troy) and Patti Dorgler (Floral Park, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) combined with junior Emily Drake (Athens, N.Y./Coxsackie-Athens) and sophomore Secret Clark (Bronx, N.Y./NYC Charter for A.E.C.I.) to handle the scoring in the second quarter. Potsdam got back into the game and cut St. Lawrence's lead to four points going into the half.

The Saints' put up five points in the first three minutes of the third, but Driscoll and freshman guard Drew Dufrane (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) combined to kick in six points for the Bears. Following the fast break layup from Driscoll, St. Lawrence got their offense in full swing with a 14-4 run, that included two 3-point plays from Hynes, to end the quarter and hold the 14 point advantage.

Hynes continued her scoring into the final quarter with the Saints' first seven points, but Potsdam compiled 14 points during the first seven minutes of fourth to get within seven after Smith hit two from the free throw line. St. Lawrence got back out to a 14 point lead, but Potsdam clipped away again to get it back to an eight point deficit during the last 50 seconds of the game. Hynes hit another two foul shots to seal the 10 point victory. Dufrane scored eight of her total 13 points in the quarter.

Dorgler and Driscoll finished with 13 points and Dorgler grabbed eight rebounds for a game-high and four steals. Clark was right behind them with 11 points and Smith tacked on eight and also had four takeaways.

Dalton added 15 points for the Saints and seven boards, while Scudder and junior guard Kaelyn Kohlasch (Williston, Vt./Champlain Valley Union) each topped with 11 points. Junior guard Shayna Davner (Scarsdale, N.Y./Edgemont) fell short of a double-double with nine points and eight rebounds.

Potsdam will continue play this weekend when they host College at Brockport on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and SUNY Geneseo Saturday at 4 p.m.
