No. 17 women's basketball grinds out win in fourth over UW-Stout

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 17 UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team closed the game on a 13-0 run to record a 63-51 victory in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play on Wednesday evening at Berg Gym in the team's Play4Kay game.

UW-Stout (9-13, 3-8 WIAC) led by nine in the third quarter and went to the fourth with a 46-42 advantage but UW-Stevens Point (17-5, 8-3 WIAC) outscored the visitors 21-5 in the fourth. The Blue Devils were just 2-for-10 from the field, committed nine turnovers and did not attempt a free throw in the final quarter, while the Pointers were 11-for-21 at the line in the final 10 minutes.

The Blue Devils led 51-50 with 4:35 remaining in the fourth quarter but the Pointers held the visitors scoreless the rest of the way to score the final 13 points of the contest. An Allie Miceli layup with 4:20 left gave UW-Stevens Point its first lead since it was 10-8 late in the first quarter and the Pointers scored the final nine points at the charity stripe.

Miceli recorded her sixth double-double of the season, scoring a game-high 16 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Douglas added 14 points, six in the fourth quarter, on 3-for-4 from the field and 8-for-10 from the free-throw line. Katy Heine scored a career-high nine points and made all four of her field goals off the bench.

UW-Stevens Point went to the line 37 times compared to just eight for UW-Stout but managed to make just 20 (54.1 percent). The Pointers outscored the Blue Devils 36-28 in the paint and turned 25 UW-Stout turnovers into 23 points.

Jenna Goldsmith paced UW-Stout with 13 points, five rebounds and three blocks. Carolyn Feddema provided eight points off the bench and made a pair of three-pointers for the Blue Devils, who led for 27:39 in the game.

The Blue Devils shot 55.2 percent (16-for-29) from the field before the break and went to the locker room ahead 38-31. The visitors began to pull away late in the first quarter, using a quick 6-0 run to go ahead 21-14 late in the period.

UW-Stout led by as many as nine in the third quarter before the late UW-Stevens Point rally and did not trail from the 1:35 mark of the first quarter until a Mickey Roland layup with 4:46 left in the fourth. The Pointers held a commanding 44-29 advantage on the boards, including 20 offensive rebounds that led to a 9-0 edge in second-chance points.

The game was part of the national Play4Kay initiative, which raises money in the fight against cancer. At halftime, the Pointers presented a check to Saint Michael's Foundation for $6,000 that went towards Project Embrace.

Up next for UW-Stevens Point is a road matchup with UW-Eau Claire on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. at Zorn Arena.
