MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Dec. 18, 2015) – After a slow start, the Sewanee women's basketball team rallied back to defeat Rust College, 83-70, Friday, at the Bancorp South Holiday Classic on the campus of Rhodes College.
The Tigers are now 7-3 overall and have won three straight games. Additionally, Sewanee has earned victories in its past four games away from Juhan Gymnasium.
After Rust jumped out to an impressive 26-14 first quarter lead, the Tigers answered back in the second. A three by freshman Corey Caulder opened the scoring. Sewanee followed with additional threes on its next three possessions. During that stretch, Caulder, Hannah McCormack, andSavannah Rose all connected from outside.
With Rose's three with 6:04 left, Sewanee took a 28-27 lead. After Rust had a layup from Demetrius Bradshaw, Bella Taylor opened a quick 6-0 run by the purple and gold over the next two minutes. With Sewanee ahead by three, 34-31, Rust closed the half on a 4-0 run after Bradshaw made a free throw and Kayla Tills hit a three with 15 seconds left.
After making 43.9 percent of their attempts in the second quarter, which included 57.1 percent of their threes, the Tigers kept rolling in the third quarter. The Tigers opened the third on a 6-3 run to start the period.
After Rust tied the game at 44-44 with 5:30 left, the score remainder close down the final stretch of the third. In fact, the score would be tied three times including as the quarter concluded at 53-53 after a pair of Jamie Chauvin free throws.
In the fourth quarter, Sewanee closed the door on Rust with a 76.9 shooting percentage. The Tigers made six of their first seven shots en route to building a 71-63 lead with 5:06 to play. After Caulder missed a layup and then grabbed the ensuing rebound and made her next attempt, Sewanee closed the game on a 12-6 run.
Sewanee finished the fourth quarter 10-of-13 overall and a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line.
Individually, Taylor led five Tigers in double figures with 22 points, six rebounds, and seven assists. Caulder added 18 points and eight rebounds while Chauvin finished with 15 and six boards.
Rose and Katie Wayne also played well with 12 points each as the Tigers finished with a 46.0 shooting percentage. Additionally, Sewanee's 48.0 three-point shooting percentage was a season best.
Bradshaw paced Rust with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Sewanee quickly returns to action with a noon contest against MacMurray, Saturday.
