(DANVILLE, Ky.) – Junior guard forward Sydney Moss (St. Albans, W.Va./Boone County (Ky.)) recorded a double-double tonight (Friday, November 21, 2014) with 29 points and 13 rebounds to lead the third-ranked Thomas More College women's basketball team to a 72-62 win over Maryville (Tenn.) College in the opening game of the Hampton Inn Classic hosted by Centre College at Alumni Gymnasium in Danville, Kentucky.
With the win, the Saints open the season at 1-0 and with the loss, the Scots fall to 1-1.
Maryville jumped out to a 5-0 lead when Rachel Hawn made a lay-up with 18:30 to play in the first half. Thomas More answered with a 14-4 run capped by a Moss lay-up with 11:14 to play in the opening half to take a 14-9 lead. Maryville retook the lead at 18-16 when Mindy Brackins' lay-up capped a 9-2 run with 4:22 to play in the half. The Saints closed out the half on a 10-5 run to take a 26-23 lead at halftime when Moss made a three-pointer with 14-seconds to play in the opening half.
Thomas More opened the second half on a 21-14 run to extend the lead to 47-37 when senior guard Sydni Wainscott (Erlanger, Ky./Simon Kenton) made a three-pointer with 11:47 to play in the game. The Scots responded with an 8-4 run to cut the lead to 51-45 when Kelsey Brown made two free-throws with 7:59 to play in game. That would be as close as Maryville would come as Thomas More closed out the game on a 21-17 run for the 72-62 win.
Wainscott joined Moss in double-figure scoring as she had 19 points in the game. Junior forward Alexa Santamaria (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) just missed a double-double as she had nine points and nine rebounds. Junior guard Kiley Bartels (Southgate, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) led the team in assists with two.
Thomas More returns to action tomorrow as it plays Centre on the final day of the Hampton Inn Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Alumni Gymnasium.
