Benedictine Women Shoot Past Marian

LISLE, Ill. - Riding hot shooting from three-point land, the Benedictine University women's basketball team rolled to a 69-54 win over Marian on Saturday afternoon, setting the stage for a big showdown in the regular season finale on Wednesday.

Benedictine struggled to get into an early rhythm. The Eagles fell behind 5-1 and scored just three points in the first three minutes of the contest. A three from Michelle Gaede jump started the attack, opening a 12-1 run. Gaede scored seven points during the string. Meghan Novak buried her first three to finish the run and hand the Eagles an 18-7 advantage. Novak would hit seven threes in the game including six straight.

Three-pointers from Novak and Gaede helped Benedictine lead by 18 on two occasions in the half. The Eagles held a 39-24 edge at the break.

The offense sputtered at the start of the second half as well but Marian (4-20, 3-14) could not take advantage. Benedictine did not score until a three from Novak with 16:28 left in the game. The Eagles went on to lead by 23 at 49-26 following another Novak trey with 14:34 left. Marian scrapped to within 10 points at 54-44 with 6:19 remaining but Benedictine netted seven straight to go up by 17 and put the game out of reach.

Novak led all scorers with 22 points. Gaede added 15 with Kam Haifleigh netting 11 in the win. Benedictine shot 57.1 percent in the first half and 51.9 percent for the game. The Eagles hit nine threes, seven from Novak and three from Gaede.

Benedictine (12-12, 10-6) will wrap up the regular season on Wednesday night against Concordia Chicago. Both teams are tied for second in the South Division. The winner will receive a first round home game in the conference tournament. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
