GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Caroline Murphy (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) scored a game-high 18 points as the Gettysburg College women's basketball team grabbed sole possession of second place in the Centennial Conference with a 47-36 victory over Haverford College inside Bream Gym Saturday afternoon.

Gettysburg (11-5, 8-3 CC) won for the seventh time in its last eight games with another stout defensive performance. The Bullets came into the game leading all of Division III in field-goal percentage defense and the team backed it up by holding Haverford (10-5, 7-4 CC) to just 19.4 percent shooting from the floor. The Fords put up 19 more shots than Gettysburg, but hit only 13-of-67, including just 3-of-22 from beyond the arc. Gettysburg has held its last 13 opponents below 30 percent shooting from the field.

The Bullets did not turn in a great shooting performance, connecting on just 13-of-48 (27.1 percent) attempts for the game, but Murphy and classmate Alyssa Isler (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) carried the offensive load. Murphy finished 6-for-12 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line, while adding nine rebounds and three blocks. Isler did most of her damage late in the game from the charity stripe, where she finished 8-for-10 as part of a 15-point outing.

The hosts jumped out to an early advantage with Murphy and Isler both canning three-pointers as part of a 10-5 lead at 14:01. The lead would build to seven (19-12) on a trey by freshman Jessica Porter (Narberth, Pa./Lower Merion), but Haverford would claw its way back, ending the half with a 9-2 run to tie the game.

The lead changed hands several times in the early stages of the second half until a lay-up by Isler gave Gettysburg a 29-27 advantage at 12:57. Dominique Meeks would keep the deficit at two with a lay-up at 9:50, but that would be the Fords' last field goal over the next five minutes. In the meantime, Murphy and Isler each converted a pair of free throws and junior Cori Younghans (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) converted a lay-up after picking up a steal to boost the lead to 37-29 with 6:04 left.

Gettysburg would ice the game at the line, knocking down 10 attempts inside the final 2:37. Isler went 6-of-8 at the charity stripe during that final stretch.

Sophomore Jenna Swope (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) grabbed eight rebounds and scored four points for Gettysburg. Porter turned in five points, seven rebounds, and five assists.

Meeks was the lone Ford to reach double-figures, finishing with 14 points and 10 boards. Elizabeth Lynch added seven points and Rachel Baskin and Nina Voith each grabbed seven rebounds.

Gettysburg resumes play at home against Dickinson College on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m.
