Falcons Cruise to 71-47 Win over Newbury

Lianna Carrero (Hamden, Conn.) scored 22 points on 8-of-14 shooting to lead the Albertus Magnus women's basketball team to a 71-47 win over Newbury College on Friday night. With the win, the Falcons improve to 9-1 on the year.

Carrero led the Falcons with 14 first-half points as Albertus led 33-29 at the break. After Newbury took a 3-0 lead to open the contest, Albertus went on an 8-0 run to jump to an 8-3 advantage and held the lead the rest of the game.

Olivia Sutherland (Wallingford, Conn.) came off the bench for the Falcons and registered four points, five rebounds and one assist in the first half. She finished with seven points and a career-high eight rebounds.

The Falcons held the Nighthawks to a 29.6-shooting percentage in the opening half, while Albertus shot 38.5%, led by a 6-of-9 showing from Carrero.

Albertus opened the second half with a 15-8 run to extend its lead to 11 before registering its largest lead of the game of 26 points with 1:46 on the clock. Newbury struggled from the floor in the second half, shooting just 19.4% percent, including a 0-of-3 clip from behind the arc.

Carrero, who entered tonight's game 42 points shy of 1,000, is now 20 points away from the coveted milestone.

Annie Sutila (Bridgeport, Conn.) finished the contest with 10 points, while Annie Raucci (Milford, Conn.) added nine points, four assists and eight rebounds. Junior Nicole Acerra (East Haven, Conn.) contributed with four points, four rebounds, five assists and six steals.

The Falcons registered 26 points off 21 Newbury turnovers. The Nighthawks were led by Kwanasia Fredricks with nine points and seven boards.

The Falcons return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 5, in a 2:30 p.m. contest against St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn. That game will be played at the brand-new Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., home of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets.
