Second half improvement not enough for Edgewood College

MADISON, Wis. – For the second straight game, the Edgewood College women's team faced a tough Northern Athletics Conference defense. At the Edgedome on Thursday night, Edgewood College struggled against the pressure and fell to Alverno College 65-49.

Alverno College's defense only allowed the Eagles (2-6, 2-2 NAC) to score seven field goals in the first half. Edgewood College took 30 shots, only converting 23.3 percent of them. An earlyMariah Hill three-pointer and four straight points by Alison Tobin gave the Eagles a 7-5 lead with just over 16 minutes to play, but the Inferno retaliated with three consecutive baskets of their own. Alverno extended their lead to eight points with six minutes remaining in the half and the Eagles were able to cut the deficit to five off a free throw and a Chelsey Watkins layup, but could not get any closer. The Inferno hit a pair of free throws late in the half to extend their lead to nine at the break.

The Inferno (2-6, 2-2) maintained a double digit lead until the 11:40 mark in the second half when Emily Anderson hit a three-pointer bring the Eagles closer. Edgewood College continued to pressure the ball on defense and forced a few Alverno College turnovers, but could not turn those opportunities into points. The Inferno shot 13-for-16 from the free throw line in the second half, including 6-for-7 in the final two minutes to close the game.

Alverno's Devon Gorman scored 22 points to lead the Inferno, who shot 45.8 percent from the field. Edgewood College improved in the second half, but only converted on 26.6 percent of their baskets in the loss.

Dareon Henderson poured in a career-high 16 points and grabbed six boards off the bench to lead the Eagles. Hill also scored in double figures, netting 10 points. Tobin was strong on the glass, grabbing nine boards.

The Eagles head to Milwaukee to take on MSOE this Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Edgewood College will look for their third conference win against the winless Raiders. Live video will be provided and the link can be found onEdgewoodCollegeEagles.com.
