THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - A final second lay-up by Marika Staton was the deciding blow handing Cal Lutheran women's basketball a 60-59 loss to close out regular season play. The Regals will be on the road Thursday to face Occidental in the SCIAC Post-Season Tournament semifinals.

Box Score: UR 60, CLU 59 - F

Six seconds remained on the clock, possession with Redlands in front of the Cal Lutheran bench and the Bulldogs down by 59-58. Staton took the pass and dribble towards the right corner before rounding out her route towards the CLU basket. She scored 13 to lead her team with her final shot falling through the hoop with :00.2 left on the clock.

To get to that point Cal Lutheran mounted a furious charge late in the first half cutting a 15-point deficit down to just 32-29 at halftime. The Regals defense forced the Bulldogs into 16 first half turnovers and outshot Redlands 38-24 from the field.

The momentum continued into the start of the second half as Cal Lutheran took over the lead following an Erica Whitley 3-pointer at the 18:33 mark. She was a standout performer for the Regals contributing game-highs of 19 points, 10 rebounds, five steals, and four assists in 33 minutes of floor time.

Cal Lutheran held the lead for all but 26 seconds from that point on. Redlands used an 8-0 run to take a 58-56 lead late in the game, but Chelsey Hastigan responded on the ensuing possession with a go-ahead 3-pointer with just over one minute left. It was the only points Cal Lutheran scored over the final four minutes of regulation.

Redlands' Kaity Lykins finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. The Regals held Mariah Barbetti-Cori and Courtney Carroll to a combined 15 points and 16 rebounds. The duo managed only three points and three rebounds together in the second half.

CLU's Rachel Heagy led the bench with 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor in 16 minutes. Cameron Jones went for eight points and seven boards in 21 minutes.

Cal Lutheran seniors Meaghan Goodenough, Shana Moore, and Chelsey Hastigan were honored during "Senior Night" prior to Saturday's tip as they played in the final regular season home game of their collegiate careers. The trio combined for 10 points, six rebounds and two assists against Redlands.

Goodenough and Moore had played a crucial role in two previous final second shots in their careers. Goodenough assisted on the final second game-winning shot in her collegiate debut back in 2008. Moore made the game-winning shot against La Verne just two weeks prior to tonight in a one-point win.

Cal Lutheran (16-9, 9-5 SCIAC) tied for third in the final conference standings with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Athenas won both head-to-head meeting with the Regals to earn the higher seed for the SCIAC Post-Season Tournament.

Cal Lutheran will travel to Occidental for its semifinal contest on Feb. 23. The Regals are the only SCIAC team to defeat the Tigers this season.
