ALMA, Mich. - It was a tough end to the season for the Trine University women's basketball team as their second half comeback fell short, falling 60-53 to Alma College. The Thunder finish the season with an overall record of 11-14 and 5-11 in the MIAA.
Trine scored the first points of the game as junior Sydney Spragg (Reading, Mich./Reading) converted on a free throw as she was fouled making a layup. The Scots would hit back-to-back shots from long range as they took their first lead. Junior Megan Loveberry (Quincy, Mich./Quincy) answered right back as she nailed a three of her own to tie the game. Alma would hit another pair of three's to push their lead to back to six.
From there both offenses would get going as the two sides trade baskets as Alma led by just three with 7:15 to go in the half. Alma would go on an 8-2 run to push their lead to nine with five minutes to go. Trine would score the final four points of the half as they trailed 31-27 going into the break.
Less than two minutes into the second half, the Thunder tied the score at 31 following a pair of free throws by Spragg and a jumper by fellow junior Haley Killingbeck (Poneto, Ind./Southern Wells). Trine would take a three point lead with eight minutes to go as Spragg and freshman Sicily Boyce (Ashley, Ind./Prairie Heights) made back-to-back layups.
The Scots would answer back hitting a shot from long range and then converting on a layup to retake a three point lead. With Alma still up by three with just under two minutes to go into the game, the Scots would hit another shot from down town. Spragg would hit a pair of free throws for the Thunder to pull within four with 1:23 to go, but that would be as close as the would get as turnover in the final minute didn't allow the Thunder scoring opportunities.
Spragg led all players with a game-high 18 points. Spragg finished the afternoon with a career-high three blocks to go along with five rebounds. Sophomore Hannah Hewes (Fremont, Ind./Fremont) scored seven points off the bench. Loveberry led the Thunder with eight rebounds while scoring six points. Boyce picked up seven boards and six points.
In the final game of her career, senior Danielle Senf (Blanchardville, Wis./Pecatonica) finished the day with a game-high seven assists and four steals to go along with six rebounds and four points. Fellow senior Lauren Davis (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield) had two points off the bench.
