LaGrange women beat Maryville for first time ever

MARYVILLE, Tenn. - LaGrange College ended 12 years of frustration with an 80-74 win over Maryville College in a GSAC showdown Saturday. The win was the first ever for the Panthers after 25 straight losses to the Lady Scots.

The win also moved the Panthers (13-5, 9-1 GSAC) back into first place in the GSAC. Maryville (10-6, 6-1 GSAC) came into the game unbeaten in conference play. The Panthers played the game without Katie Covington, the GSAC's leading scorer, due to injury.

Heather Miller (Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota Christian) led four Panthers in double figures with 19 points. Elizabeth Williams (Gainesville, Ga./North Hall) had 14 points, Alex Wilson (Watkinsville, Ga./Oconee County) 13 and Madison McDonald (St. Augustine, Fla./St. Augustine) 10.

Kiera Payne led Maryville with a game-high 20 points. Tayler Smith had 15 points, while Lauren Burkett and Janell Menard each had 13.

The Lady Scots controlled the rebounding with a 48-23 advantage. But the Panthers forced 22 turnovers, while committing only 12.

The difference in the game came at the free throw line. The Panthers were 29-of-41 from the line. The Lady Scots were 19-of-26.\

The Panthers trailed only once in the game. Payne completed a three-point lead to put the Lady Scots up 14-13 with 11 minutes left in the first half.

The Panthers' biggest lead of the first half was eight points. Wilson's 3-pointer put the Panthers up 25-17 with 7:34 left in the half. The Panthers led 35-33 at halftime.

Smith made 1-of-2 freet throws to tie the game for the last time, 35-35, early in the second half. The Panthers went up 59-51 on a free throw by McDonald with 8:31 left.

Maryville got within two, 63-61, with five minutes left. A jumper by Miller put the Panthers up 70-61 with less than three minutes left. From there, the Panthers scored their final 10 points from the line to hold off the Lady Scots and secure the historic win.
