Giel Matches Season-High, but 'Berg Women’s Hoops Falls at Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Ohio—Sophomore guard Emily Giel (Burton/Burkshire) matched a season-high with 14 points, but the Heidelberg University women's basketball team fell to Wilmington College, 77-53, today in an Ohio Athletic Conference game at Fred Raizk Arena in Wilmington, Ohio. Giel made a season-high four three-pointers in seven attempts and also recorded two assists

In addition to Giel, Heidelberg (4-13, 1-9 OAC) was led by junior forward Molly Schriber (Sidney) with 10 points on four-of-eight shooting. Senior guard Jazmine Shaw (Columbus/Hamilton Township) added six points and pulled down a game and season-high six rebounds.

Wilmington (10-7, 5-5 OAC) was led by Spencer Robles, who tallied 12 points—all in the first half—and also shot four-of-seven from behind the arc. Bethany Ahrens added nine points and Shelby Kies and Emily Zimmerman each 8 points tallied nine markers.

Wilmington led by double-digits for more than 33 minutes of the game, racing out to a 13-2 lead at the 13:26 mark of the first half as Robles made her first triple of the game. The Quakers increased their lead to 22-5 when Haley Howard canned a jumper in the paint at the 10:59 mark.

The Berg went on a 14-6 run that spanned 7:30, cutting the deficit to 31-19 when Giel made a three-pointer with 3:29 on the clock.

Wilmington continued to build its lead back to 16 points and entered the intermission with a 41-25 lead.

The Quakers began the second half on a 10-6 jaunt, building a 51-31 lead following a lay-up by Bria Eslick at the 16:55 mark. Wilmington would lead by 20 points or more for the remainder of the game.

The Berg shot 31.7 percent (20-of-63) from the field.

Wilmington was 44.9 percent (31-of-69) shooting and held a 51-37 rebound advantage.

Heidelberg returns home Wednesday, Jan. 25 to host Baldwin-Wallace College. B-W defeated the Berg, 70-60, in Berea earlier this season.
