SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Sophomore forward Samantha Crough (Cohasset, MA) led four players in double figures with 15 points as Endicott posted a 66-62 victory over Endicott in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball game Saturday afternoon (Jan. 7) at the Alumni Healthful Living Center.
The Gulls evened their record at 5-5 and improved to 2-1 in the conference. This was the sixth straight loss for the Golden Bears who are now 2-8 overall and 1-2 in CCC play.
Crough had a solid outing making 7-of-12 shots from the field (including a three-pointer) along with five rebounds, a block, and steal.
Sophomore forwards Jennifer White (Lisbon, NH) and Jordan Ferland (Charlestown, NH) each added 13 points while pulling down nine and seven rebounds, respectively.
Endicott received a big lift from a pair of reserves as freshman forward Kayleen Whall (Foxboro, MA) contributed 11 points (all in the first half) and junior guard Jen McBrien (Medfield, MA) eight rebounds.
Western New England took an early 8-7 lead before EC used a 16-8 run for a 23-16 advantage following a three-pointer by McBrien (her only points of the game) at the 9:35 mark. The Gulls held the Golden Bears without a point in the final 4:36 to take a 34-22 halftime lead.
The visitors led 40-24 a little less than two minutes into the second half and maintained a 14-point advantage at 49-35 advantage when White drained a three-pointer with 11:40 remaining.
Western New England gradually chipped away at the lead using a 13-5 run to move within 57-53 following a free throw by sophomore guard Ali Pessalano (Hampden, MA) with 1:58 left. Junior guard Emily Savino (Ellington, CT) made it 58-55 with a layup 39 seconds later before
Crough hit a key jumper with 54.6 seconds remaining followed by two free throws by sophomore guard Sarah Robinson (Norwich, VT) with 29.6 seconds left to put the Gulls ahead 62-55. Savino connected on a long-three pointer to get WNE within 64-62 with two seconds remaining before White sank a pair of foul shots a second later to complete the scoring.
Savino led four Golden Bears in double digits with 18 points while Pessolano finished with 12 points and senior forward Sarah Proper (Coxsackie, NY) 11. Junior center Elena Radzikowski (Medway, MA) chipped-in with 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench.
