Adrian Falls 65-46 to Hanover in Opener

ADA, Ohio – The season began with a bevy of mistakes for the women's basketball team that they could simply not overcome in a 65-46 loss to Hanover in the first game of the Sodexo Classic Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Ohio Northern. The Bulldogs committed 33 turnovers compared to just 13 for the Panthers and Hanover outscored Adrian, 35-4, in points off turnovers. Adrian and Hanover both shot 37 percent from the field, but the Panthers took 19 more shots and made seven more field goals because of the extra possessions. Hanover also went 12-of-18 from the free throw line while Adrian made just 6-of-16 from the line.

The Panthers got off to a good start and the Bulldogs could not take a lead in the contest. Hanover scored the game's first 10 points in the first 3:14 and Adrian then had to play catch-up for the rest of the game. LaQwana Dockery's layup at 16:35 got Adrian on the scoreboard and the Bulldogs clawed their way back to a 15-14 deficit after a Jenn Headley layup with 12:05 left in the first half.

Neither team scored for the next three minutes before Katie Gahimer hit a three-pointer to push the lead back to four at 18-14. Hanover completed a 11-0 run at the 4:08 mark on a layup by Amanda Trambaugh to lead 26-14. The Panthers held onto a 33-20 lead at intermission.

Hanover connected on a three-pointer right out of the locker room to push their lead to 16 at 36-20 and Adrian could not get any closer than 11 points on two occasions with the latest coming with 13:35 left in the game. Adrian finished 18-of-49 from the floor and 4-of-13 from behind the arc. The Bulldogs did a good job on the boards with a +10 edge (47-37) including 14 offensive caroms.

Junior guard Nicole Boggs led Adrian with a career-high 12 points off the bench in 21 minutes. She shot 4-of-9 from the field and 3-of-4 behind the arc. She also had a team-high five assists and a team-best four steals. Headley shot 4-of-4 from the floor to finish with eight points. She also grabbed eight rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench. Dockery also finished the game with eight points and eight boards in 30 minutes. The Bulldogs (0-1) will tip-off at 1:00 PM tomorrow against Transylvania to conclude the weekend tournament.
