Agnes Scott Basketball Wins Season Opener

Agnes Scott defeated the Lady Skyhawks of Point University in their season opener at home today.

After tying at 14-14 with eight minutes remaining in the first half, the Scotties took control and led 30-21 going into half-time.  In the second half, the Lady Skyhawks fought back and brought the score to 43-41 with a three-pointer from Raven Bell with 3:38 remaining.  The Scotties responded with a layup by Morgan Cooper and then a successful free throw from Cooper bringing the score up to 46-41 with 2:08 remaining on the clock. The teams went back and forth over the next minute and a half, and with only 33 seconds remaining, Register helped cinch the victory with seven successful free throws.

The Scotties shot an impressive 48.1% during the first half compared to the Lady Skyhawks 41.2%. The Scotties dropped down to shooting 36.8% in the second half, for an average of 43.5% (20-46) as the Lady Skyhawks dropped to 27.8% for an average of 32.1% (17-53). The Scotties shot 48.3% from the free throw line.

The Lady Skyhawks edged out the Scotties in rebounds 38-35.  Point's Chauntel Herrod racked up 13 rebounds and Genefine Sapateh totaled 13 for the Scotties.

Leading the scoring for the Scotties was junior Arielle Register with 19 points including seven-of-nine free throws and five-of-nine from the floor plus two-of-five three pointers. In addition to leading the Scotties in rebounds, junior all-conference player Sapateh put up 10 points for the Scotties, shooting four-of-eight from the floor plus two-of-six free throws.  Rounding out the top-scorers for the Scotties were senior Kimberly Reeves and junior Tiffany Jones with eight points each.  Reeves shot four-of-seven from the floor and racked up seven rebounds. Jones, last season's three-point leader for the Scotties, scored six points from the floor and sunk two free throws.

The Scotties will play at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta on Thursday at 7 p.m. before returning home on Saturday to face Methodist University at 2 p.m.
