Falcons Top Titans With Second-Half Surge

Alise Holst marked a three-point play on back-to-back possessions to cap a 55-50 win for the UW-River Falls women's basketball team over UW-Oshkosh on Saturday (Jan. 29) in River Falls.

After Michelle Boeder (Sr. • Oshkosh) put UW-Oshkosh up, 28-26, with a three-pointer, the Falcons (14-6/6-5 WIAC) posted eight unanswered points to take the lead for good. Maranda Dohrn accounted for two lay-ups, while Taylor House's basket in the lane put UW-River Falls in front, 34-28, with 14:20 remaining.

The closest the Titans (10-10/5-6 WIAC) got the rest of the way was four points at 38-34. UW-River Falls put the game out of reach with its 14-4 scoring spurt. House and Brittany Gregorich combined for four successful free throws before Holst tallied six quick points to make it 52-38 with 4:50 left.

Boeder and Shelby Churchill (Sr. • Sheboygan) closed the gap during the final five minutes. Boeder dropped in three lay-ups and a free throw, as Churchill earned three late points. The Titans had just four players score as they finished shooting 36 percent from the field (16-44), including 23 percent behind the arc (3-13).

UW-River Falls had three different players get in the scorebook as it went up, 6-0, just 1:51 into play. Boeder bounced back with four points as the Titans marked the next nine. Katie Kitzke (So. • South Milwaukee) reeled off eight straight UW-Oshkosh points to put her team up, 14-12, with 9:02 left in the half.

Neither squad could pull away in the last six minutes of the period as the largest margin was two points. The Titans got their final seven at the foul line, with five coming from Kelsey Myklebust (Jr. • Wisconsin Dells). Gregorich drained a late jump shot to give the Falcons a 22-21 advantage at the break.

Dohrn topped her squad with 13 points, six rebounds and four assists. Holst contributed 11 points for the Falcons, who converted 48 percent from the field, 57 percent at the foul line (8-14) and 1-of-5 tries from three-point land. Both teams grabbed 30 rebounds in the game.

UW-Oshkosh got an outstanding statistical line from Boeder, who totaled 20 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals. Churchill tacked on 11 points and six rebounds, in addition to 10 points from Kitzke. The Titans sank 15-of-17 free throws (88 percent) while turning the ball over 14 times.

UW-Oshkosh's next challenge will be against UW-Platteville on Wednesday (Feb. 2) at Kolf Sports Center.
