Blue Devils Shut Titans Down In Closing Minutes

UW-Stout scored the contest's last nine points on free throws to gain a 58-50 win over the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team on Saturday (Feb. 5) in Menomonie.

Sami Schoeder, who tallied a game-best 19 points, drained six foul shots during the closing 3:10. The Titans (11-11/6-7 WIAC) couldn't score in the last three minutes as they turned the ball over twice and missed both their field goal attempts. UW-Oshkosh committed 22 turnovers on the evening, while UW-Stout had just 12.

Deep connections by Tricia VanVreede and Kayla Windt gave UW-Stout an early 8-2 advantage. The Titans then had four different players mark as Katie Kitzke's triple gave her team a one-point lead (9-8). Becca Diedrich (Fr. • Two Rivers) nailed a jump shot midway through the opening half to tie the score at 13.

After the Blue Devils (8-14/3-10 WIAC) went almost seven minutes without a field goal, the Titans took a 20-15 cushion on Laura Ebbens' (Sr. • Appleton) jumper. UW-Stout had another drought, going without a made basket for the final 4:31 of the period. Kelsey Myklebust (Jr. • Wisconsin Dells) dropped in a lay-up before the break to take a 32-20 lead at halftime.

After intermission, the Titans stretched their margin to 13 points (39-26) with 16:30 on the clock. UW-Stout then rolled off a 16-6 scoring spurt that featured two long-range bombs by Schoeder. Kimmy Keehr converted a pair of free throws with 8:47 to play that cut the Blue Devil deficit to 45-42.

Schoeder sank three tosses at the charity stripe to make it a 47-47 tally with 7:05 to go. The Titans then used Kitzke's jumper and a Wenig free throw to go in front, 50-49. UW-Oshkosh, the best foul-shooting team in the WIAC (79 percent), converted 18-of-21 attempts in the game (86 percent).

The Titans were paced by 13 points and seven rebounds from Myklebust, as Ebbens racked up 10 points. Kitzke marked nine points, Wenig had eight points and Shelby Churchill (Sr. • Sheboygan) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. UW-Oshkosh compiled 34 percent shooting overall, including 20 percent from downtown (2-10).

Despite 29 percent shooting from the field, UW-Stout benefited from 23-of-29 free throw accuracy (79 percent). VanVreede added nine points and six boards for the Blue Devils, who nailed 5-of-18 deep attempts (28 percent).

UW-Oshkosh has alternated wins and losses over the past five games. The Titans will aim for their next victory at UW-La Crosse on Wednesday (Feb. 9).
