Pointers Weather Storm, Advance to Sweet 16

STEVENS POINT- The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team had six different players score in double figures as they edged Simpson College 82-75 Saturday night at the Berg Gymnasium in a NCAA tournament second round.

The games opening half was played very evenly, with no team having more than a seven point lead and the lead changed four times.

Ashley Averkamp scored 12 of her team-high 16 points in the opening half as the Pointers took a 41-38 lead into the break.

The opening six and a half minutes of the second half was much of the same as the Pointers held a two point edge with 13:33 left to play, 52-50.

The Pointers (27-2) then scored the next ten points, including a big three point shot by Brooke Allen to go up 62-50 with 10:02 left to play in the game.

Simpson (22-7) would not go away however as they answered scoring the next five points with an Amy Hamilton three-pointer cutting the lead to seven.

Senior guard Andrea Flease then hit a huge three point shot with 6:38 left, breaking a scoreless streak of 3:24 to give the Pointers a 65-55 lead.

After a Storm basket, Sam Barber dialed in from long distance, giving the Pointers an 11 point lead with 4:30 left in the game.

The Storm cut the lead to six points with 32 seconds left in the game on a made jumper by Darrina Bledsoe.

Christin Coles then made a pair of free throws to push the lead back to eight. After a pair of Storm free throws brought the game back to six, Josi Schultz made one of two from the line to give the Pointers a seven point lead with 15 seconds remaining.

The Storm cut it back to five with five seconds left, but Coles again knocked down a couple shots from the charity stripe to seal the win for the Pointers.

Coles, Flease, and Britta Petersen each finished with 12 points in the game. Flease also had a game-high eight assists, giving her a total of 22 assists in the first two rounds of NCAA Tournament play.

Also scoring in double figures for the Pointers was Schultz with 10 and Sam Barber with 11 points.

Petersen led the team with seven rebounds, while Averkamp also added six.

Leading the way for the Storm was Staci Schutjer as she had 22 points. Ali Sokol had a double-double for the Storm with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

The Pointers will return to action next weekend as they will be taking part in the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament. The Pointers will be facing the winner of George Fox and Louisiana College in a Sweet 16 matchup.
