Geneseo, N.Y. - The Babson College Beavers (28-0) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball tournament with a 78-58 win over the Medaille Mavericks (22-5) in the Carl Schrader Gymnasium at SUNY Geneseo tonight.

Junior Kathleen King (Framingham, Mass.) scored 13 of her game-high 20 points in the second half and added a career-high 19 rebounds to post her 12th double-double of the season to lead Babson. Junior Nicki Wurdeman (Rowley, Mass.) had her 10th double-double of the year with 18 points and 10 boards for the Beavers and senior Damisi Adewumi (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 12 of her 19 points in the first half as Babson shot a blistering 32-for-58 (55.2%) for the contest.

Babson used a 10-2 run early in the first half to take a 14-6 lead with 15:11 remaining on a three-point field goal by Adewumi. The Beavers led by as many as 21 points in the first stanza at 41-20 on a layup by senior Amanda Grammel (Leominster, Mass.) with 1:27 to play and settled for a 41-24 lead at the intermission. "I thought the way we played in the first half was key," head coach Judy Blinstrub said. "This is a high-pressure environment and I felt like out tournament experience and composure really helped us set the temp early on."
In the second half, Babson opened a 28-point lead at 52-24 on a jumper by King, but the Mavericks used a full-court press to cut the deficit to 15, their closest margin, at 60-45 with 10:34 to play on a layup by freshman Bianca Smiley (Amherst, N.Y.).  "Medaille showed what a great team they are by battling back in the second half, but fortunately we were able to overcome some of our mistakes and hold on for the win," Blinstrub added.

Freshman Joelle Pollak (Kenmore, N.Y.) came off the bench to score 12 points to lead Medaille and senior Amanda Sahhar (Orchard Park, N.Y.) scored 11 points with 13 rebounds. Smiley finished with 11 points and senior Kacie Mills (Buffalo, N.Y.) finished with 10 points and six assists.

Babson will face the winner of Friday's second game between the DeSales University Bulldogs and the host Blue Knights on Saturday at 7 p.m.
