#7 Brooklyn Downs #2 NYU-Poly in ECAC Quarterfinals

Brooklyn, NY --- The #7 seeded Brooklyn College Women's Basketball team upset #2 seeded Polytechnic Institute of NYU by a score of 64-54 earlier tonight in Downtown Brooklyn at Jacobson Gymnasium in the First Round of the 2011 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Metro Women's Basketball Championships.

Trailing by six, 14-8, at the 11:53 mark of the first half, the Bulldogs utilized a 21-0 run over the next nine minutes to take control of the game to go up by 15, 29-14, with 2:51 left before the break. BC had seven players score in the run, led by senior Amber Gordon, who drilled a pair of three-pointers. Brooklyn would head into halftime with a 29-17 advantage. The Bulldogs stingy defense held the Fighting Blue Jays to 21.4% (6-for-28) shooting from the field in the half, while BC connected on 36.4% (12-for-33) from the floor.

The Bulldogs would maintain their lead throughout the entire second half as NYU-Poly would try to chip away at the deficit. A pair of free throws from Shelby Bruns got the the Fighting Blue Jays to within four, 46-42, with 8:41 remaining in the game. That's as close as host NYU-Poly would get as Brooklyn went on an 11-2 run to push their advantage back to double digits, 57-44, with 4:59 left in the game. Gordon once again helped key the run scoring five of the 11 points. The Bulldogs would hit their free throws down the stretch to cruise to the 64-54 victory.

Senior Ariel Smith led BC with a game-high 15 points to go along with eight rebounds, while junior Lauren Plagainos chipped in with 13 points. Gordon was the third BC player in double figures with 11 points. Junior Justine O'Callahan contributed with nine points and nine rebounds, while senior Elisha Raiford grabbed eight rebounds as Brooklyn held the rebounding edge 41-34. The Bulldogs also forced the Fighting Blue Jays into 20 turnovers.

For NYU-Poly (19-8), Kristin Leitheuser netted a game-high 15 points to go along with nine rebounds, while Bruns finished the night with 14 points. Margaux Pickell recorded a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

The win avenges Brooklyn's opening season loss to NYU-Poly, as the Fighting Blue Jays edged the Bulldogs, 66-65, back on November 17th at the West Quad Center.

The Bulldogs now improve to 17-11 overall on the season and advance to the Semifinals Round of the ECAC DIII Metro Tournament, where Brooklyn will take on CUNY Athletic Conference rival #3 Lehman College, who defeated #6 Farmingdale State in their First Round match-up, 85-78, in overtime. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 pm at the APEX on Saturday, March 5th.

This will be the third match-up between the conference rivals this season, as Brooklyn defeated Lehman 62-54 in their lone regular season game, while the Lightning got the better of the Bulldogs in the CUNYAC Semifinals, 54-39.
