Pointers Capture Fourth Straight WIAC Tournament Championship

STEVENS POINT- The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team won their fourth consecutive WIAC Tournament Championship Sunday afternoon at Berg Gym, 73-53 over UW-Whitewater.

The Pointers (25-2) got a huge game from junior Ashley Averkamp as she finished the game with a double-double. Averkamp had a game-high 23 points to go along with her 10 rebounds.

The Pointers led by just nine at the half, but outscored the Warhawks by 11 in the second half to give the Pointers their 18th consecutive win. Whitewater had the lead down to just four points early into the second half but Cassie Bandow hit two straight baskets to extend the Pointer lead and they lead by double-digits for the remainder of the game.

Britta Petersen and Sam Barber both finished in double figures with 10 and 11 points, respectively.  Petersen and Barber also finished second and third on the team in rebounding, finishing with 10 and six a piece.

The Pointers shot 50 percent from three-point range going eight for sixteen with Barber and Averkamp contributing for five of them.

Andrea Flease led the team in assists finishing with four.

The Pointers forced the Warhawks (21-6) into 20 turnovers and finished with 10 team steals in the game.

Whitewater's cold shooting didn't help them all too much. The Warhawks shot a season-low 24.5 percent, going just 13 of 53 from the field. The Warhawks were led by Dana Thompson finishing with 18 points.

With the Pointers victory, they locked up a bid to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament. The pairings of the tournament will be announced on Monday afternoon.
