Milburn keys Transy rout of Rose-Hulman, 71-50

HANOVER, Ind. - Transylvania used a 25-4 run to open the game Friday to overwhelm Rose-Hulman 71-50 in Heartland Conference women's basketball tournament action.

Transy is 19-7 on the season, while the Engineers are 10-16. The Pioneers, who defeated Rose-Hulman for the third time this year, are the No. 3 seeds in the tourney while Rose-Hulman was the sixth seed.

Transy faces No. 2 seed Franklin on Saturday at 5 p.m. The HCAC Championship game will be played on Sunday at 2 p.m. with the winner receiving the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship.

milburn Holly Milburn had 14 points in the first half for the Pioneers, who led by as many as 26 points in the opening period. Rose-Hulman never led in the contest.

The Engineers hit just three of 19 shots in the first half (16 percent) while Transy was 15 of 34 (44 percent). Neither team made a three-pointer in the first half and the Pioneers had a 19-17 edge on the boards. Transy forced the Engineers into 19 turnovers while committing just five.

Kennae Demus added eight first-half points for the Pioneers while Olivia Akridge and Shayla Black notched four each.

Milburn led the Pioneers with 20 points and six rebounds while Akridge finished with 15 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Black had nine points and six boards

Transy finished the game shooting 41 percent from the field while the Engineers were at 34 percent. Transy was 20 of 23 from the free throw line compared to 12 of 15 for Rose-Hulman. The Engineers finished the contest with 27 turnovers while Transy had 13.

Donna Marsh had 14 points to lead the Engineers. Transy's biggest lead of the second half was 30 points.

Transy's last NCAA  appearance was in 2009.
