John Carroll Women Upset No. 2 Seeded Baldwin-Wallace, 74-60, in OAC Tournament Quarterfinals

BEREA, OHIO –  Senior guard Lee Jennings scored 31 points as the John Carroll women's basketball team defeated cross-town rival Baldwin-Wallace, 74-60, tonight (Wednesday, February 22, 2011) in the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in the Lou Higgins in an Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament quarterfinal game. The number seven seeded Blue Streaks advance to the semifinals to take on third seeded Ohio Northern University in Ada on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

With its win, John Carroll improves to 15-11 overall.  In addition to Jennings for the Blue Streaks, freshman forward Missy Spahar scored 19 points and junior guard Emilee Ritchie added 16. With its loss, B-W ends its season at 18-8 overall. The Yellow Jackets were led by freshman guard Jessica Lairson (Louisville) with 13 points.

With her eight points tonight, senior All-OAC guard Amanda Schroeder (Columbus Grove) ends her career with 1,372 career points to rank third all-time, just seven points shy of second place.

In the first half, the Blue Streaks opened up the scoring when Jennings hit a layup at the 17:12 mark to give John Carroll a 2-0 lead.  B-W was able to get on the board on the ensuing possession when sophomore guard Rachel Rossman (Olmsted Falls) hit one of her two free throws to cut the lead to the  2-1.  After the teams exchanged a pair of baskets, B-W sophomore guard Megan Frisina (Corry, Pa./Corry Area) gave the Yellow Jackets a 6-4 lead when she hit a three with 14:41 remaining in the half.
 
After the teams exchanged another pair of baskets, Frisina put the Yellow Jackets up by four, 10-6, at the 13:23 mark with her second trey of the game.  A traditional three point play by Jennings on the ensuing possession would make the score 10-9 in favor of the Blue Streaks with 13:13 left.  Both teams exchanged baskets again before John Carroll's Ritchie hit a trey with 10:53 left in the half to tie the score at 14-14.
 
A layup by Schroeder with 9:10 remaining in the half broke the tie allowing the Yellow Jackets to go up 16-14. The Blue Streaks then used a 4-0 run to go up 18-16 with 7:06 remaining in the half.  B-W tied the score, 18-18, when freshman guard Kristen Troyer (Dover/Garaway) hit a jumper at the 5:47 mark. 
 
John Carroll would outscore B-W 10-3 over the remainder of the half to lead 28-21 at the intermission.

In the second half, the Blue Streaks opened on a quick 8-3 run with to give them an 36-24 advantage with 18:35 remaining.  After the teams exchanged a couple of baskets, B-W was able to cut the deficit to five, 46-41, when sophomore guard Olivia French (Bucyrus/Colonel Crawford) hit a trey with 11:23 remaining. 

Following another exchange of baskets, B-W cut the deficit to three, 52-49, when sophomore guard Jessica Carpenter (North Canton/Hoover) converted on a traditional three point play with 8:34 to play.  John Carroll then used a 12-0 run enroute to outscoring the Yellow Jackets 22-11 over the remainder of the game.

The winner of Thursday's semifinal game will advance to the 2011 OAC Championship Game on Saturday, Feb. 26 at the site of the highest remaining seeded team.
