Warhawks Fall to Pointers in Battle for First

UW-Whitewater, ranked ninth, fell to seventh ranked UW-Stevens Point 66-47 Wednesday night in Berg Gymnasium in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.

The teams were tied five times in the first half, with Whitewater's last lead 6-5 at 15:28.  The Pointers built up a six point lead, twice, 19-13 at 7:17 and 21-15 at 5:17.  Whitewater was within 21-18 with 4:03 left in the half, but the Pointers closed out the half scoring the final eight points.  UW-SP led 29-18 at the half.

Point shot 41% from the field, Whitewater 26%, and the Pointers forced 15 turnovers while committing eight.  Senior center Dana Thompson led UW-W with six points, and junior center Ashley Averkamp scored 10 for the Pointers.

Stevens Point continued to build a lead out of the lockerroom, leading 33-18 on a Britta Petersen jumper at 18:46.  Whitewater whittled the lead back to 33-26 with Chantel Burg's free throw at 13:33.  Averkamp hit a pair of free throws at 11:41 to make the UW-SP lead 39-28 and the Pointers led by double figures the rest of the way.

Whitewater shot 42% in the second half, 33% for the game, but made 6-13 (46%) of their three point attempts.  The Warhawks committed 27 turnovers.  UW-SP shot 41%, just 1-12 from beyond the arc, and hit 15-19 free throws, giving them an eight point advantage at the line. 

Thompson was the lone Warhawk to score in double figures, with 13, making 6-10 shots and she led Whitewater with eight rebounds.  Averkamp led all scorers with 19 points, including 3-3 from the line.  Petersen added 17 points on 8-13 shooting, and a game high 12 rebounds.  UW- SP senior guard, Andrea Flease, was the game leader with six steals and five assists.

The Warhawks also lost to Stevens Point in Kachel Gym, 83-69, December 8, the last time UW-W lost.  With the ten game win streak broken, UW-W is 15-3 overall and 7-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  UW-SP upping its win streak to 10, is 17-2 and 10-0 in league play.

UW-Whitewater will host UW-Stout Saturday, January 29 at 6:00 in Kachel Gym of Williams Center.
