First Place Neumann University Slips Past Women's Basketball, 51-49

RADNOR, Pa. – The Cabrini women's basketball played front-runner for more than 39 minutes on Monday night, but could not hold onto a tight lead late en route to a 51-49 loss versus Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) opponent Neumann University. Junior guard Laura Caron scored a career-best 14 points for the Cavaliers in the loss.

Cabrini led the whole way until Neumann's Sami Borcky knocked down a an elbow jumper with 27 seconds remaining in the second half, supplying the visitors with a 50-49 edge.

Sophomore guard Bethany Humenik's free throw with six ticks left pushed the lead to two points, 51-49, before Caron's desperation heave from 30 feet missed at the horn.

Caron shot 6-for-14 from the field overall. She also gathered five rebounds, blocked three shots and swiped two steals.

Freshman guard Brittany Sandone contributed eight points and three rebounds. Freshman guard MaryKate McCann and freshman forward Annie Rivituso each mixed in six points and five boards.

The Blue & White shot 45.5 percent from the field overall and owned a five-point lead at halftime, 25-20. McCann led the Cavaliers' offense in the opening period, scoring six points on 3-for-4 shooting.

Cabrini pushed its advantage to six points, 40-34, at the 10:36 mark following a free throw from Caron.

However, the Knights kept the Cavaliers at bay down the stretch, never trailing by more than four points in the final 7:39. The victory is Neumann's seventh straight to begin its 2010-11 regular season against CSAC opponents.

Senior forward Katie Young led the Knights' attack, pairing 17 points with 18 rebounds. Humenik also scored in double figures, netting 13 points.

Cabrini (4-12, 3-5 CSAC) returns to the road on Thursday, Jan. 27 at CSAC foe Keystone College. Game time against the Giants is set for 6 p.m.
