Women’s Hoops Runs Past Garnet 72-47

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gettysburg College continued its climb up the Centennial Conference standings by blowing past Swarthmore College 72-47 in women's basketball action Monday night inside Bream Gym. 

Gettysburg (11-4, 6-4 CC) earned its seventh win in its last eight contests and moved into a tie with Swarthmore (10-5, 6-4 CC) for fifth in the conference standings. Junior Julie McGrory (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) netted her third-straight game with at least 17 points, while classmate Sara Kinsley (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) finished with a dozen points and nine boards.

After pulling out a pair of three-point wins in the season series last winter, Gettysburg wasted no time on Monday, turning in 11 of the first 13 points, including a three-pointer by freshman Rianna Doane (Glen Mills, Pa./Bayard Rustin) at 14:22. The lead dipped to five as the hosts struggled with the press early on, but the  was rectified and the Bullets began to build the margin through defense.

With the score at 25-18, sophomore Alyssa Oursler (Middletown, Md./Middletown) forced a steal just past midcourt and tossed the ball up to Doane for a lay-in at 5:19. Just a minute later, McGrory came with a steal of her own and converted a lay-up from Doane. Freshman Katie Earley (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) added a bucket in the paint to bring the advantage to a first-half high of 13 (31-18) with 3:24 left.

At the start of the final period and with Gettysburg leading 31-22, the Bullets built momentum and started to run away with the game. In less than eight minutes, the lead grew to 20 following back-to-back lay-ups by Kinsley.

Gettysburg shot a blistering 57.1 percent from the field and out-scored the visitors 41-25 in the final stanza with the margin reaching as much as 30 points.

Gettysburg turned in a complete game against Swarthmore, shooting 50 percent from the field (30-60), scoring 26 points off 25 Garnet turnovers, and dishing out 22 assists. The Bullets out-rebounded the Garnet 35-28 and recorded a season-high 18 steals.                                                                            

After putting up 17 against Ursinus College and 21 against No. 19 Muhlenberg College, McGrory once again paced the Bullets with 17 tallies against Swarthmore. She hit 6-of-10 shots from the field, including both her tries from beyond the arc. Kinsley finished 5-of-9 from the field and blocked one shot to move into a three-way tie for second on Gettysburg's all-time list at 103.

Doane put together a well-rounded stat line with nine points, six rebounds, six assists, and four steals. Oursler posted nine points, while senior Mary Spicer (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart) notched six points, three assists, and four steals.

Double-double machine Kathryn Stockbower led Swarthmore with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Katie Lytle and Kayla Moritzky each added eight points.

 Gettysburg hits the road for its next affair at McDaniel College (3-11, 3-8 CC) on Wednesday, Jan. 19, at 6 p.m.
