Central offense lacking at Simpson

The cold-shooting woes continued for the Central College women's basketball team as Simpson College remained unbeaten in Iowa Conference play with a 106-58 rout Wednesday night.

Central (3-11 overall, 0-5 conference) hit just 23.3 percent from the field in the opening half before finishing at 30.3 percent for the game. Simpson took command early, with a 10-2 start, and was up 52-22 at intermission.

"We had 20 turnovers in the first half and you just can't give Simpson that many turnovers," coach Jerry Nikkel said. "And so many of our turnovers were caused by things we weren't supposed to do—we tried to go over the top on the press and we've got to get that corrected because that's what Simpson lives on."

Nikkel emptied the bench as 16 Central players saw action and none played more than 23 minutes. That helped prevent any of the Dutch from scoring in double figures. Center Haley Brillhart had eight points and six rebounds while forward Kelsey Schuring and guard Alyssa Schwartz added seven points and guard Sarah Paulson had a team-high seven rebounds.

Simpson (11-3 overall, 5-0 conference) held a 53-43 advantage on the glass in winning its 10th straight game. The Storm shot 49.4 percent from the field.

"We've got to get back to the way we played last Saturday," Nikkel said. "We've got some games coming up we have a chance to win and we just have to forget this one."

Central returns home Saturday, with a women's-men's doubleheader against Cornell College. The women's game tips off at 4 p.m. Cornell, which claimed a couple of narrow wins over the Dutch last season, is 7-6 overall and 2-4 in league play after surprising Luther College Wednesday night at Mount Vernon, 61-54.

Both games will be broadcast on KRLS-FM (92.1). The broadcast can be accessed through www.central.edu/athletics, along with a video webcast and live stats.
