ABILENE, Texas — Hardin-Simmons women's basketball team held off No. 22 Mississippi College, 58-57 in American Southwest Conference action at the Mabee Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Jasmine Lewis, who scored a game-high 24 points, scored eight straight points from the 6:23 mark to the 4:44 mark and HSU busted open a 45-45 game to take a 53-45 lead.

MC then scored six straight points to cut it to 53-51 with 2:33. Then sophomore guard Whitney Enis hit her third 3-pointer of the second half to give the Cowgirls some breathing room with a 56-51 lead.

Jaleesa Taylor's bucket made it 56-55 with :22 to play and Jasmine Lewis hit a pair of free throw to make it 58-55. Jennifer Wair then hit two free throws for MC with :04 to play, but MC could not get a desperation shot off after a missed free throw and turnover on the Cowgirls.

Enis broke out of a season-long shooting slump with three big 3-pointers in the second half, all three coming at times when MC had either tied the game or cut it to one point.

Lewis was the only Cowgirl to hit double figures. Taylor had 22 points and Jennifer Weir had 12 points to pace MC. The Choctaws, who came into the week undefeated, lost for the second straight game on their Abilene trip.

The Cowgirls are now 9-2 overall and 6-2 in American Southwest Conference action. MC fell to 11-2 overall and to 6-2 in ASC play. HSU will host Sul Ross State on Thursday in ASC West play.

In the Sul Ross State game, Shanna Briggs will look to become the school's all-time leader in wins. She is tied with Julie Goodenough with 188 career wins.
