(Buffalo, NY) – After a sluggish start to the game the 20th ranked Medaille women's basketball team finally began to knock down shots and defend as they rolled past Hilbert College (82-35) in their first AMCC game of 2011. The win is the eighth straight for Medaille and it is the 25th straight regular season win in AMCC play.
The Lady Mavs stifling defense overwhelmed the Hawks as they forced Hilbert into (41) turnovers and Medaille exploited those miscues by turning them into (45) points of their own. Twenty five of those turnovers came courtesy of steals by Medaille defenders, just three shy of a program record.
The scoring ledger would see every member of the squad find the bottom of the net as all thirteen players scored. Leading the way was senior Jordan Schrimmel (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) who posted a team high (15) points on six of eight shooting from the field and (3 of 5) from behind the arc. She also dished out (4) assists in the win.
The rebounding battle was also won by Medaille as they held a (45-33) advantage in that area with senior Mame Yaa Ankoma-Mensa (Brampton, ONT/D'Youville) pulling down a game high (11) boards, she also had three assists and steals in the game. While freshman Joelle Pollak (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore East) knocked down three more three pointers en route to a (13) point night.
After shooting just (37.1%) in the opening half Medaille connected on (53.3%) of their shots in the final twenty minutes. The Lady Mavs bench outscored their counterparts (47-4) and they dominated the paint outscoring the Hawks (38-8) in the lane.
The win moves Medaille to (10-1) overall and they stay unbeaten in conference play at (5-0). They will hit the home hardwood again on Saturday (1/8) when they host Mt. Aloysius College at 3:00pm in the Sullivan Center.
