DOVER, Del. - Wesley College's Cory Boyd (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) and Angie Owens (Seaford, Del./Seaford) combined for 42 points as the Wolverines rebounded from an icy start for a 62-53 win over Gwynedd-Mercy in non-conference action.
Boyd nailed 6-of-8 from three-point ranged and 8-of-15 overall to finish with a game-high 24 points. The senior also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out seven assists on the night.
Owens had a matching 8-of-15 line shooting for 18 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked two shots.
Wesley (7-5) missed its first 19 shots of the game and did not score until a lay up by Jazmine Miller (Dover, Del./Dover) went in over 11 minutes into the game. The Griffins (6-3), however, had hit just 4-of-17 to start the game and had scored just nine points themselves.
The Wolverines hit 9-of-18 the remainder of the period to outscore the Griffins 23-8 and take a 23-17 lead into the locker room. Wesley had 15 offensive rebounds in the half.
Boyd score eight points as the Wolverines opened the second half with a 14-2 run that stetched the lead to 18, 37-19, four minutes into the second half. Later, the Griffins cut it to six, 43-37, on a bucket by Bryn Cotteta, but a 10-2 Wesley run quickly built the lead back to 15 points.
Wesley grabbed a team-high 53 rebounds on the night, holding a 12 rebound advantage on the night. 19 of those boards came off the offensive glass, resulting in an 18-6 margin in second chance points.
Allison Beddia (New Castle, Del./Delcastle) led the team with 10 rebounds and Heather Fuller (Greenwood, Del./Sussex Tech) came off the bench for a career-high eight.
After the team's cold start to the night, Wesley hit 24-of-49 shots (49 percent) to finish the night at 35 percent.
Kristy McGrath led Gwynedd-Mercy with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Brittany Neill added 13 points and Cotteta had 11 on 5-of-10 shooting. Cotteta also had four steals.
Wesley is back in action on Wednesday, January 5 when Frostburg State comes to Wentworth Gymnasium.
