Warhawks Route Stout 83-64 in Menomonie

The Warhawk women's basketball, ranked twenty-third in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, defeated UW-Stout 83-64 in Menomonie Saturday night.

With Stout leading 9-6 UW-Whitewater combined the inside play of senior center Dana Thompson and a couple of steals into a 12-0 run to lead 18-9 at the 12:42 mark of the first half.  Thompson accounted for six of those points on three baskets.  Stout came back to within four at 9:42 and the score at 18-14, but UW-W used a pair of 6-0 runs over the next five minutes to build a 34-16 lead with 4:54 left in the half.  Stout pulled closer by ending the half on their own 6-0 run, for a 38-27 Whitewater lead at intermission.

The Blue Devils scored the first basket of the second half to cut the lead to single digits, but a Mary Merg layup seventeen seconds later put it back to double digits where it remained the rest of the game.  Whitewater eventually built a 26-point lead, at the end of a 10-0 streak, for its largest lead of the game at 63-37 with 11:45 left in the game. 

Whitewater shot 45% for the game, including 53% in the second half, and held Stout to 35% for the game.  The Warhawk defense forced 27 turnovers, almost double the number (14) committed by UW-W.  Whitewater shot well from the line, hitting 12-13 for 92%, but Stout actually out-scored the Warhawks at the stripe by hitting 18-24.  Utilizing a system learned at the knee of Stout coach Mark Thomas, UW-W coach Keri Carollo used fifteen players in the game, and eleven of them broke into the scoring column.  Whitewater's bench tallied 38 points, Stout's 16. 

Thompson led UW-W with 14 points and six rebounds.  Junior forward Chantel Burg and sophomore forward Cortney Kumerow had ten points apiece, and junior guard Jamie Swanson contributed game highs in assists, 4, and steals, 7.   Freshman guard Sami Schoeder had the game high in points, 20, and chipped in with seven rebound for UW-S.  The only other player in double digits for the Blue Devils was sophomore guard Kayla Windt, with 11.  Sophomore forward Whitney Rawdon grabbed a game high eight boards for Stout.

The Warhawks remain unbeaten in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference 2-0 and improve to 5-1 overall. UW-Stout falls to 0-2 in the WIAC and 3-5 overall.

UW-W will host UW-Stevens Point Wednesday, December 8 at 7:00 pm in Kachel Gym in Williams Center. The game has been designated 2007-08 and 2009-10 championship recognition night.
