Lady Mavs Storm Back for Win in AMCC Opener

More news about: Medaille

(Buffalo, NY) – The 25th ranked Medaille College women's basketball team found itself in a (10-0) hole just (3:37) into the first half of their AMCC opener at home against Penn State-Behrend.  The Lady Mavs would erase that deficit by halftime en route to a (74-63) victory.

Much of the first half saw Medaille chipping away at the Lion lead and they were able to carry momentum into the locker room with a (38-35) lead at the intermission courtesy of (50.0%) shooting from the floor in the opening stanza.

The real story of this contest would be the bench play of the Lady Mavs, which outscored the Behrend reserves (43-17).  Leading that charge was senior Jordan Schrimmel (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) who had one of the best days of her career as she came off the bench to torch the nets.  She finished the night with a game high (18) points on (6 of 7) shooting from the field, including (2 of 3) from behind the arc.

Freshman Bianca Smiley (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) made the most of her home debut by tallying (15) points, grabbing (9) boards and blocking a pair of shots. While Mame Yaa Ankoma-Mensa (Brampton, Ont./D'Youville) grabbed eight offensive boards en route to a game high (10) rebound game.

The Lady Mavs stingy defense forced Penn State-Behrend into (22) turnovers and turned those miscues into (23) points.  Medaille's dominance on the offensive glass really turned the tide of the game as the Lady Mavs scored (25) second chance points, while limiting the Lions to just four.

The win moves Medaille to (3-1) overall and (1-0) in AMCC play.  They will head to Pitt-Greensburg on Saturday (12/4) for a 3:00pm conference matchup.
