Offensive outburst leads Simpson in rout of Iowa Wesleyan

STORM LAKE - Stacey Schutjer led five players in double figures as Simpson rolled to 96-78 win against Iowa Wesleyan in the final round of the Buena Vista Classic on Saturday.

For the second game in a row, Schutjer scored 18 points to lead the Storm (2-3). Amy Hamilton and Jeni Hegstrom scored 14 points each and Ali Sokol and Kate Nielsen scored 11 points a piece off the bench in Simpson's best offensive performance of the young season.

Sokol and Nielsen led an impressive outing by Simpson's bench, which outscored Iowa Wesleyan's, 42-7.

After an offesively-charged first half, Simpson took a 54-45 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Storm's defense settled down in the second period, going on a 28-13 run to open a 24-point lead with just over nine minutes remaining in the game.

Simpson's outside shooting was pivotal to the offensive outburst, as the team hit 12 of 24 shots from beyond the arc. Hamilton drilled four long balls and Cathy Kain went a perfect 3-for-3 from downtown, leading the team's outside effort.

Anna Jones and Abby Brend scored 16 points each to lead the Tigers (5-3). Melanie McCreight and Sheray Brown added 15 a piece.

Schutjer and Hamilton each earned a place on the all-tournament team. The Storm fell to UW-Stevens Point on Friday, 78-60.

Simpson returns to action Wednesday, Dec. 1 when it hosts Dubuque in the Iowa Conference opener at Cowles Fieldhouse. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
