Bergeron's torrid shooting fuels Bowdoin in 82-55 win

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Bowdoin College senior guard Katie Bergeron (Bradley, Maine) scored 17 of her game-high 21 points in the first half to help the Polar Bears open up a 46-24 advantage on their way to an 82-55 victory over the University of New England in non-conference women's basketball action Tuesday evening at the Campus Center.

Bergeron scored the game's first five points, helping the Polar Bears (2-1) race out to an early 11-0 lead. She was 7-for-8 in the half as Bowdoin shot 62.1 percent (18 of 29) in the frame.

Bergeron finished with five rebounds, five steals and four assists and was 8 of 10 from the floor, including a perfect 3-for-3 effort from beyond the arc.

Junior Jill Henrikson (Bath, Maine) and classmate Nicole Coombes (Simsbury, Conn.) tallied 14 points apiece in support of Bergeron's strong effort. Henrikson had 11 of her points after the break, while Coombes was 4 of 5 from the floor and perfect on all six of her free throw attempts for the contest. Senior Colleen Sweeney (Danbury, Conn.) grabbed a game-best nine boards.

Senior Carrie Bunnell (Barnet, Vt.) and junior Margo Russell (Madison, Maine) each scored 15 points for the Nor'easters (4-1). Bunnell added six boards and sophomore Beth Suggs (Bath, Maine) was credited with a team-high seven.

Bowdoin converted 13 of its first 16 field goal attempts to rush out to a 33-13 cushion at the 9:39 mark. Bergeron tallied 10 points and junior Ellery Gould (East Sandwich, Mass.) contributed nine during the spurt.

The Polar Bears had 17 fastbreak points in the first half and were 8 of 11 from beyond the arc.

The visitors ended any hope of a UNE rally by opening the second half with a 10-3 run to lead 56-27 with 14:42 on the clock. Bowdoin's largest margin of the evening crested at 34 (71-37) on a Henrikson three-ball with under seven minutes left.

For the evening, the Polar Bears made half (30 of 60) of their field goal attempts, while UNE converted just 31 percent (18 of 58).

Both teams have several days off before returning to action. Big Blue plays a road contest at Wheaton Monday at 7 p.m., and Bowdoin hosts in-state rival Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
